I have a running 1992 Camaro RS with a heads/cam LT1 engine and T56 transmission bolted in. I picked it up as an unfinished project. The car is a T-top car and has no other options. Manual windows, radio missing, No A/C, etc... It drives, it's fast, but it does not drive real well. I think the car should be capable of 500+ horsepower once it's complete, and due to the low weight, I think it might be fast, too.

The mods include:
LT1 swap, ported and polished LT4 heads, 236/242 cam, 1.6:1 rockers
Ford Red-top injectors
255LPH fuel pump
T56 Transmission with Hurst short-shifter
Full Subframe
Koni Adjustable dampers
3.73:1 Auburn 10-bolt
Be-Cool Radiator
160 Degree Thermostat
One fried opti-spark
Full 2002 Z28 leather interior
275/60R15 rear tires
245/60R15 fronts
Fuzzy dice
mail-order tune

What's done:
Engine and trans mounted
Headers and exhaust completely installed
Interior is all there
Temp and voltage meters hooked up
Brake rotors and calipers changed and lines bled

What is not done:
Gauges are not hooked up (Speedo, tach)
Needs a thorough tune
Accelerator pedal does not fully open the TB
The car has a single cylinder misfire

When I bought it, it had sat for a long time, roughtly two years. I changed the fuel pump because it was all varnished up and I dumped the gas. Once I got it started, it barely idled. I changed the MAF and got it idling and checked the fluids. After topping off the coolant, I took it out for a ride. It was a blast to drive, until coolant spewed out of one of the top hose of the radiator and trickled onto the opti and killed the car.

I changed the opti and figured out that the steam pipe was hooked where the overflow can is supposed to be hooked up. I re-routed the hoses, changed the hose clamps and ran it for an hour without it going over 180 degrees stationary. I decided to drive it and it overheated and leaked on the opti again.

This time, I did some research and learned how to bleed the cooling system of air and ran it again, ran great, but then I had a single cylinder misfire after running about 20 minutes. I changed the cap and rotor, plugs, wires and coil, but still have this misfire.

The car is in my garage now, and I decided to take off the valve covers, fuel rail and the intake manifold to make sure everything is intact mechanically. Everything looks fine.

So, my guess is the optispark is bad and causing one cylinder to misfire. Could this be the case?

check your wires. if its just one cylinder, that would be my best guess. its probably burnt. also, check to make sure all your injectors are firing, as I think that can cause a misfire as well. I wouldnt jump to the opti being bad just yet, but if you rule a few things out you can start looking in that direction.

I changed the wires twice actually. It was my first thought too... The car runs very steadily and starts right up, it just runs on 7 cylinders. Wires are the Granatelli solid core wires and plugs are the NGK 55 or something along those lines.

you will need to do some wire cutting an connecting to the gauge. the pcm which spits out all the car info on what its doing is not getting to the dash. either get a new gauge dash that is compatable or find out which wires need to be spliced from the wiring harness an hooked up to the old dash gauge. your injector might not be getting pulse. take the plug wire an put it on a differnt plug a see if it fires then. if that doesnt work try an swap a injector for a working one an see what happens.

The other thing you could do with the gauges is a 4th gen dash swap. I know it sounds crazy but its realy not that hard to do. I put a dash console seats and door panels from a 96 in my 91 . The dash pretty much solved all my instrument cluster problems . Plus the looks on peoples faces when they look in my car is priceless . Plenty of write ups for this sort of thing at thirdgen.org. They have a whole section just for lt1 and ls1 swaps in their forums.

I just used all my factory gauges in my 84 when i put the LT1 in it. I just used 3rd gen oil sending unit and temperature sending unit for the oil pressure and water temp. Then i just used a speedo cable for the speedometer but i'm using the 700r4 so that was easy and then just ran a wire to the coil for the tach

That makes sense, the car only came with the LT1 sending units so I will have to pick up a few parts to get it going. The car has an electronic speedo, so has anyone had experience with an electric speedo in the 90-92 camaro LT1 swap?

Long time since my last post... So, I got the misfire figured out some time ago and got a tune from Solomon... Turns out I had a bad water pump leaking on everything and causing havoc. New opti, water pump and wires solved it.

Thank you for the tip on the sending units, I have gone along and bought what I need there. What I think I might need to do is isolate the wiring from the engine and body which has already been done and redo it. What's the best wiring harness I should get for an application like this? Should I also purchase a new 1992 Camaro harness?
