Generally im doing LS upgrade to my 1981 Malibu. I've researched a bit in getting different reasons not to use ly6, but mostly under the impression it doesn't benefit the people that im getting the advice from. Originally was planning somewhat of a budget build where I'd gradually change the heads, cam, an intake to make a stout but reliable street car. While researching I learned ly6 already had the heads an matching intake, an that would just leave me with buying the cam kit an possibly, harness an throttle body for it. apparently when I approached potential person I was going to do business with he totally shot it down, reason being I'd have more obstacles an it would coast me more money that route. I'm not sure can anyone clear up this clouded topic

If your engine guy won't build one for you, find another engine builder.

The advantage of the LY6 is it already has the rectangular port L92 heads. It has other "issues" that your builder is aware of, but that doesn't disqualify it as an option.

If you can get a complete LY6/6L60E or 6L80E dropout (2wd highly preferred), that would probably make a nice package for your Malibu. If you don't go with the Gen IV tranny, then you may want to stick with the LQ4/9. As coco stated, the earlier 6.0 is a viable approach. And, if you go with an earlier transmission, you may want to stick with an earlier 6.0 - for sure they are cheaper than the LY6.
