I am finally putting a new cam and head package on my 96 LT1 and I am sick of mail order tunes. They just aren't as "spot on" as I want. I think I finally have to suck it up and get my own tuning software and learn how to do it myself. Which is the best software out there LT1 tuning? I have never tuned a car before, but I feel that I have the ability with the right software. Thank you for your suggestions.

not as easy as you might think lol. i thought the same thing, after about 5 months of reading up i took the plunge and bout the cable and tunercats, and boy was i lost! i ended up getting a tune from lt1pcmtuning.com, with logs, he can get your car DIALED!! and its only 75bucks for obd2 tunes. your biggest expense is going to be buying the obd2 tuning software(hptuners is probably your best bet) which is much more expensive than obd1 software.

you can still get obd2 lt1edit too I believe. You'll hear better reviews for Tunercat/DST generally.
I have used Lt1-Edit for several years now.
It works very well (that is IF you have enough knowledge/testing equipment to do tuning). Setting the ignition and fuel mixture without being able to measure the reaction other than driving and data logging is time consuming, requires patience and needs to be done in small steps.
I would recommend you take the car to a tuner with a load bearing dyno and wide band O2 sensing to get the car 'spot on'. That produces the best real world tune.
From there I use the tuning software to save a copy of the tune and make other adjustments aside from the ignition / fuel settings. Things like rear gear ratio, tire size, fan turn on temps, shift points and to read/reset those pesky SES codes.

Jet's DST will give you options of tuning other vehicles beside your own, even other engines/PCMs.
From seeing screenshots of LT1_Edit in the past, I personally feel that TunerCat/DST is designed better. But of course that's just my preference, obviously others with LT1_E feel differently!
The other downside to LT1_E is that its files are encrypted. Whereas, with DST, you can edit files made by the earlier OBDII Tuner made by TunerCat, and vice-versa.
