I'm installing shorty headers and y pipe and muffler , will I need to tune it ? And if so would hypertech tune help?

I bought my car with shorties and mufflers and it seemed to run fine with the hypertech tuner that also came with it from the previous owner. Almost everywhere you read though about Hypertechs, you will find something bad to be said about them. I had no time to play with mine cause I started tearing the car apart right after I bought it. But I would say that a handheld generic tune is not necessary for exhaust
So will I even need tune?

no, not for the headers...but a "tune" will provide more power over stock with or without headers. Unfortunately the Hypertech will yield no performance gain
I had bought a '96 Z28 new back in '96. I never ran it at the track stock but with only the hypertech power programmer I ran 13.8 in the 1/4. Those cars were said to have ran 14.2 stock. So from my personal experience I would say they did improve performance. On the other hand I would say a quality exhaust would give you better gains. My friend had a '95 Trans Am with a borla cat back and he would pull away from me.

Whatever it did, it helped it run 13.8. Like I said I never ran it stock so I don't know what it ran without it but those cars were tested at 14.2. It was also a cool day that morning but once the day got hotter it didn't run 13.8 again.

thats a damn good time for a stock lt1 fbody, you should be proud of it man

but trust me, the hypertech didn't do you any favours.. people have dumped the hypertech 'performance bins' for these cars and they add like a degree of advance.

they do work magic on some other vehicles that have conservative low octane tunes, but gm's stock tune is already pretty aggressive on the timing end of things, as these cars are reverse flow cooled and intended for use with high octane fuel from the get go

other people have driven high 13 second times on bone stock LT1s without the tune
Maybe the car was quicker than the 14.2 it was advertised as. Idk. But the shifts were really crisp, always chirping 2nd and kicking it out sometimes going into 2nd. If the roads were a little wet it would spin the tires a little going into 3rd. I had the stock Goodyear GSC's

you understand i will constantly dispute your very scientific butt-dyno hypertech review..

you're just a good driver and you hit a good run at a good altitude and ambient temperature

yes, the hypertech will modify part-throttle line pressure and firm up shifts. those dont matter on a 1/4 mile run, WOT line pressure is pretty much maxed out regardless

i know i sound like im being a jerk, but im concerned that some poor noob might read this and actually buy one of those peices of shit, instead of spending their money getting a real tune that could potentially buy them a tenth.
All I know is that my '96 Z28 with just the hypertech ran 13.8. Like I said when I ran it, it was a cool morning and didn't run that time again once the day warmed up. The car only had maybe 5k on the odometer, the car was an A4.

I'm not defending the hypertech or saying its the way to go. I'm only stating what I ran with that being my only mod

Yea, even though the Lt1 ran "14.2" plenty of stock have ran 13.8. Some engines just get their act together better

I agree, it's possible that maybe mine ran 13.9 stock n only gained a tenth. Who knows I'm only stating what mine ran. I had a nice LT1

Had :(

I agree though pretty good time for mostly stock :)
Yeah... Had. It was my first new car. Had the t tips which I love. I have a '94 Z now but no t tops. But I'd like to put them in this one.

O I understand. My first F-Body was a 86 Firebird.

Then 4 yrs ago I bought a 87 Iroc Z with T-tops.

Then got my Current Convertible.

LOVED T-Tops but the Vert is a major fun near the beach :D
No you do not need a tune.

And no a hypertech POS is not a tune. It changes gear/shift parameters for a "faster" feeling car but thats it.

Get a real tune.

I have ran a 13.8 at the track on a cool night, probably in the fifties. My car is all stock except for bbk shorty headers, and a K and N Cold air kit. Before i got the headers i was running 14.2 s and 14.1 s. My computer has never been tuned. Cant tell a difference daily driving, but it may help a tad at the track. I just added a aluminum crank pulley, alt pulley, and a 160 degree thermastat. Hopefully i can gain 2 tenths of a second.
