So I was driving along to Harbor Freight to pick a pig tail and I see this Mercury Cougar (late 80's early 90's) driving all crazy in my rear view mirror. He catches up while tail gating the car in front of him and next to me (my left). I'm cruising along at about 3 over (my norm). Well, he obviously want's to run and a 2011 Chevy Diesel fly's up on my ass, ugh. I drop it to 2nd and take off.

I make way to an open spot in flowing traffic and resume cruising at my normal speed. The truck blows past me and then the Merc. Alrighty then.

A little ways down the road traffic becomes to thick for them to be crazy any more and I catch back up. Turns out the Merc is taking the same turn as me. We stop at the left turn together (double left turn lane), but we are not at the front. He rolls his window down as do I. He's got side mounted exhaust and a nice little (little) lop at idle. He asks if I have the 305... really?! Gen 4 buddy. I tell him no, LT1. Light turns green and we proceed with traffic. About a half mile own the road we find our selves at the front of a red light together, side by side. We get to talking some more. His mom had a 5.0 IROC and would get walked on by the LT1's all the time. He took his 5.0 (302) and bored it to 351 and it's "got a lot in mods". So I point at the light and he nods to a race. He was probably about 21 or so.

So the light turns green and I ride it out (manual) from about 3500 rpm's. I squeal a little but go pretty good. I heard his car over mine as he revved and got going. I look over when I flat foot it to 2nd and I don't see him. I look in the rear view and he's is at least 2 car lengths back. Wow! By the time I hit 3rd it was an annihilation, not even close. He obviously didn't have the mods he claimed. But modded he certainly was.

I'm proud of my little LT1 powered Zelda (my car's name).

Haha. People and their mods. He'd have to seriously bore and stroke a 302 to get to 351. Its always fun to trounce on someone that has been bragging about their "modding" especially when you know they're full of crap.
Who would do that to a Mercury Cougar from those years? A friend of mine has a 93 with the 5.0 HO and it has trouble just edging out my stock 99 4wd Blazer
I'm surprised at how many cars my little beater beats up on. Although I thought it was slow (my Camaro) because I am used to driving liter bikes, Corvettes, and M3's. Apparently she's faster than I thought.

People say the same about LT1 4th gens. The Merc is a Fox body just like a Mustang. If it really had a 351 or even a stroker (347) it very well should have been fast. A healthy HC 5.0. in a fox should be a 12 sec car easily.
I wasn't saying something like that wouldn't be fast, my friends is bone stock and is bad off the line. . . Plus my Blazer's pretty fast :p lol
Healthy engines are healthy! There are so many old dying LT1s and 5.0s out there that it surprises a lot of people when they run into a stout one. 80-90s cars are becoming a dying breed. Most people don't enjoy working or spending money on cars so they sell or junk them. Most people have moved on to bigger and better things by now. We crazy LT1 owners are keeping these things alive.
Its a love/hate relationship with my car. I love it and the mrs hates it! Good kill.

I love working on cars. I find more joy in that than driving them, and I like driving them, a lot.

Same story here for my ex-wife. I found it funny.

Actually, when I went to Discount Tire to pick up my 295/35ZR18 Continental ExtremContact DWS's (great tires by the way!)for the rear the guy there that pulled my car into the bay was scared of it and had a hell of a time with the clutch. He was a smaller younger kid and I told him to just ride it out, I'll be replacing the clutch soon anyway.

He tells me he's an import guy and my car scares him. I asked if he wanted to race to which he immediately refused. They don't all think their cars are the fastest thing on the road!
