Hey Guys

I have a 1999 Firebird V6. We did a lot to the car already, but since Day 1 I have this whine noise and it makes me crazy. We try to find the source of the noise.

What we did:

- All idle pulleys
- New water pump.
- Clutch throwout bearing

It was stuff that needed to be done anyway. Oil is changed as well. I am very picky with my car. So on a test-drive the whine noise came back. After all what I spend, it is kinda...well let's say it cost you the last nerv (I am german, sorry for the english). When you remove the cap from the Oil Tank, air comes out.

I did some research in the web and found a guy who had the same 3.8 problem like I had, and he said it was the PCV Valve. I am new on this field, and I have an half idea what he talks about. Is that the thing that is located under the passenger side intake? I have a V6 and not a V8. Before I owned a 1988 Formula, that was a complete different field of work.

Guys I face it> I have no idea what to do. I just so hope somebody can help me. May by somebody had the same problem, what do you guys think.

please complete the following quiz to help narrow it down

- any change between hot engine and cold engine?
- does it change in pitch or volume with RPM, or both?
- does it sound different when the engine is under load?
- does it change when steering from a dead stop?
- does it change pitch when you put electrical load on (headlights or something)?
- when the car is going faster, does it get louder or change pitch? (is it based on engine speed or car speed)

> With RPM (gasing) it goes louder, when engine runs its steady

> It is gettin louder when I gas it but when the car runs normal its a steady

ok so it's only when the car is warm,

it gets louder when the engine rpm increases,

but it doesn't change pitch (tonhohe in german i think)?

just making sure, because that's very important, since usually things on your belt/tensioner/alternator/power steering/etc. will increase in PITCH as engine speed increases, and usually they are much worse when cold.

is it more a whistle or a whine?

can you take a video and post it?

Belt is not the problem, tensioner neither, alternator either. We took the belt of and on the lift was still makin the noise. Power Steering not realy either, it does not change the sound when I turn my Steeringwheel. It just realy do it when Gas the car a little. Whining no, its more like a whistle... It realy sounds like a Whine Or Belt Squeal. The guy for GM where going to tell me I need new gaskets, but they supergood in their...

it could be a vacuum leak; a tiny vacuum leak will whistle/whine

i'd really like to hear it, take a cellphone video or something?

Update....looks like it has to do with the Intakes and air...probly dirt in a pipe...in Spring I get into that...gonna be a bitch

Update on my car:

Yesterday my buddy and I replaced the PCV Velve and thought that could be finaly the end for this story but it was not. So, back to investigation. The next thing what we going to do is

1. Check the air filter and the air filter housing (might be clogged
or even a cloth or rag has gone inside)

2. Check the breather pipe (it's the pipe that takes oil vapor from
oil pan to air filter or intake manifold)

Since my engine runs like a dream I do not think I have
a major engine problem. I also have no leaks. It sounds
mainly like filter and breather. As these cost nothing and are easy to
check before concluding it's an internal problem (piston rings...) we will go to this problem next...my goodness, this car is giving me a heck of a time hey. Anyway I hope after that this is the end of the Story and I can go back to the other stuff I was gettin me. What do you guys think ?

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Look for any broken hoses or ones that aren't connected

Thanks, I will investigate this tonight, I will do some enginework during the weekend...I let you guys know when somethinge new pops up...my car gets a big update in the next months :) Thanks to :LS1LT1flag:

I work on the car since last Week Friday, I will do some testing, but have problems to get to the engine, anyone have an idea what helps ?

Sorry your video was removed so I wasn't able to listen to the noise. I would look into the intake tract for any air seeping in at loose clamps or connections. Try removing the air filter and take it for a ride and see if the noise becomes lower in volume. Do you still have the original air intake on the car?

If it is a vacuum leak, spray small sections of the rubber tubing with a silicone spray (tire shine seems to work well) and listen for the noise to change, After each section wipe them down with a cloth and move on to a new section, I have found this to be the easiest way to locate both leaking and dry rotting hoses.

Yes, I still have the original Air Intake on the car, was gettin me a new one anyway...guess it is time then ??

+1 for Transamman reply. It also sounds like a vacuum problem to me. A couple other options to try (aside from the tire shine Transamman mentioned) would be a hand held propane torch, same deal with the rubber tubing to get it into the nooks and crannies, or carb cleaner. *NOTE personally I would use propane it's a more stable gas than the stuff in carb cleaner. If you use carb cleaner MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, it's very flammable and some guys have lost cars over it. All you're looking for is a change in engine RPM and bam that's your leak. Here's a link to a good youtube video explaining how to find vacuum leaks

So it looks like the system what get's air into the egine is all stuffed up...I will clean it out first and see what comes arround after that.

Awsome, found it !!

We finaly found the problem. I try it with my broken english to explain. The passage way in the PCV Valve System was complete clogged. Lots of dryed nasty dirt in there. No wonder the car can't breath. Time to clean that shit out, did one round already, this is nasty. Airfilter looks good, not to bad. Get me a new one soon as well. Will make some pics Wednesday. I am back on the road till Saturday. How in the world does stuff like this happen, I do not understand, that is about crazy:screwy:
