What kind of gears does a stock auto 1996 formula have?
Hope this isn't a dumb question :lookleave:

Most automatic cars came with either 2.73 or 3.23 gears. The easiest way to check is to look at your rpo sticker, found in glove box, or center console GU2=2.73
GU5=3.23

Or if you don't have the rpo sticker, you can jack up the rear wheels. Then put a mark on drive shaft and tire. Spin tire 1 complete revolution and watch drive shaft. The number of revolutions the drive shaft makes for 1 tire revolution will be your gear ratio.

Example if drive shaft turns 2.73 times for 1 tire revolution, you have 2.73 gears
If shaft turns 3.23 times you have 3.23 gears.
If shaft turns a different number of turns, that's your gear ratio, and a former owner changed gears in car.

Oh Okay! I heard you can also check by looking at where you change to put it in Drive or park 0r 3,2,1 and they said if you have a "1" you have this gear...but Idk if that's valid?

Cut pasted below from another post...mine was a '94 2.73 (not any more) and first was locked out (not any more). I believe it was because of noise level emissions in 1st gear back then. Basically you needed 3.23 to get 1st gear, and Z rated tires to get the faster speedo.

There were 4 ways to order an LT1 f-body automatic.
1. base model 115mph speedo, non Z rated tires, 2:73 gears and no first gear selection
2. 3:23 gears and you're allowed first gear, non z rated tires 115mph speedo
3. 2:73 gears and no first gear selection but Z rated tires so 155mph speedo
4. 3:23's and Z rated tires = performance package w/ 155mph speedo and no first gear lockout
