So my car is in for transmission service (also got a tranny leak around the pan) and I am told the steering rack is leaking a little, and it needs to be replaced.

They say gm no longer makes one so they have to install an aftermarket one.

Anyone have experience with aftermarket steering racks? I didnt even know mine was leaking till they told me.

Should I just leave the rack as is and not let them touch it?

Thanks!

Most common leak spot on GM rack is the end boots being torn. These should be available as spare parts. Either from GM dealer of parts stores like auto zone, advance, etc. Try ebay also.

Another common leak is where high pressure hose goes into rack assembly.

Thanks again cocobolo95!

It was leaking at the shaft connection and I was told the only option was to replace it. They installed a bbb rack, but now...it feels as if i have to turn the wheel more to steer the car when compared to before.

I read somewhere that the LT1 cars got a "faster" rack than the V6. However, I just checked rockauto, compared both 1997 V6 3.8l with the V8 5.7L, and all the part numbers were the same. So now I am confused! Did I end up with the one designed for V6?
