...for the wife:

http://www.apple.com/ipad

She decided at Christmas she wanted an Amazon Kindle, and I said just wait a few months and let's see what Apple comes up with. As I suspected, its way better than a kindle and its way better than some POS netbook. For what most people do with a laptop, the iPad is going to be all they'd really ever need.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts when you do end up getting it. My first reaction was that it appeared to fill a small niche market somewhere between an ipod touch/kindle/netbook that didn't really need filling. Personally, I think it's size will hold it back, but then again people buy everything apple puts out like it comes with free crack, so it wouldn't surprise me if it sells 8 gazillion units in the 1st 2 months...

Well it just came out yesterday. Doesn't go on sale for two more months.

All the iPhone games and apps will work on it out of the box. Plus it has a new eBook store so she can read all her novels on the device and it will keep her from spending me into the poorhouse at Barnes & Noble, LOL.

Can you imagine how cool a data logger/tuner would be on one of those?

I have mixed feelings about the iPad. To me it just seems like an awkward, difficult to carry, iPod touch with 3G....if you spend the $700 for the 3G and $30/month

And there will be a $15 3G data plan with limited data, and no contracts.

I'm buying her the one with 3G. 99% of the time she'll be using it at home on our wifi, but on occasion if we take it travelling, we'll be able to buy a month of 3g access and then cancel it when we get home. I'd rather pay more and have the 3G radio than wish later that we had it.

Well....a netbook goes for about $200-300 and I have a feeling if the 3G is from AT&T....there going to be a contract.
