Here recently I mad ethe discovery that making a car faster isn't just giving it more horsepower (although thats always nice), but also tuning and tweaking the suspension so it hooks better, handles better, and brakes better. I have learned very well about most of the components but one thing still has me stumped ...SHOCKS!!! I want to replace them on the T/A but don't know what to do. What kind would you suggest? I've heard good thing about re-valved Bilsteins, Koni's, Edelbrocks, KYB AGXs, and QA1s. I have no i dea what to go with and I'm open for suggestions.

What is the car going to be doing? Daily Driver, Auto Cross, Drag Racing. I think a little more info is needed to really make up your mind. I've got the QA1 adjustables and love them. But my car is strickly for drag racing. If I tried to take a corner, the car would probably roll over, loose it because of the skinnies or roll the sideway over on the slicks.

Q1A's are great. and no not just for drag racing, put them on a 8 or 9 setting and it will carve corners too

It will be a daily driver with a couple of trips to the Auto-X and the road course. I will only go to the 1/4 mile every once in a long while.

Shocks are the single most important component of a suspension IMO. They have the greatest effect on ride quality over any other piece as well. It's all give and take though. Shocks dampen your springs through their travel, while the springs basically just hold the car up and prevent it from bottoming out. Shocks are your primary contributor to how a car handles, rides, and transfers weight.

I think generally it's easy to get a set of shocks that ride good on the street, and are also suited for one other purpose (handling vs. weight transfer). Here is what I think...

Budget Drag Racer: KYB AGX
Best Choice Drag Racer: HAL QA1

Budget Handling: Bilstein Revalves
Best Choice Handling: Koni Single Adjustables

*I've had stock shocks, Bilsteins, QA1s, and now Koni SAs on the car over the time I've had it. I've spent alot of time trying to get my suspension just right, and I'm finally happy with the way the car rides, handles, and even performs at the drag strip. I'm running Koni SAs. They are the best all around shock on the market, by a LONG shot IMO. You pay a little extra, but shocks are the most critical part of your supsension IMO, so it's worth it. My car on stock springs and Koni SAs rides very nicely (better than stock), transfers weight fairly well at the track, and handles great. They are a little harder to adjust but the range in which you can set your car up to perform any given task (street driving, drag racing, autocross) is priceless IMO.

after all is said and done, if you are seriouse about where you race then you should have adjustable shocks, how else will you tune your suspention for the track conditions???

The SLP eibach/bilstein calibrated suspension system is just awesome for auto-cross IMO, BUT beware, those soft springs don't like alot of extra weight. I already made that mistake w/an aftermarket stereo install, and unfortunately I have abused this setup.

Hey Jaber......glad to see you on the boards.

Stay away from gimmick Variable non adjustable valving. Aka Monroe Sense a Tracs...Gabriel G-Force and Ultras. They are in no way designed for sports cars like ours. Their lower end shock are similar to the De Carbon OE shocks if you want a OE ride. Personally I would recommmend an adjustable shock like KYB. It all depends on your budget. I would still Recommend adjustables though. -Tim
