My 94 6 spd shifts fine but when I'm backing up it will pop out of reverse unless I hold in tightly and still sometimes pops out and grinds. I will have to put into reverse again and hold tight while I back up. Any possibilty it's an easy fix?
Could be a number of things, but with an aging transmission it's usually the shift fork pads being worn or broken. The OEM ones are nylon and are meant to be replaced in a standard rebuild.
There is also the slight possibility of a bent shift fork or excessively worn reverse gear clutch teeth. Either way it's time to open up the transmission. The good news is reverse is easily accessible and cheap to fix.
