perfect time to learn

im sure we'd be happy to help you if you want to give it a shot yourself, or i'd even make you a bin just to play with, but you have to tell me what you want me to change.

why dont you read your existing bin and just take a browse through it in whatever tuning tool you use, and see whats there?

on a stock engine there are really only a few areas where you can benefit, as gm did a lot of work to make a tune that is both powerful and safe.

the timing map; there are areas with a stock cam that can benefit from a TINY bit more timing if running reliable 91+ octane fuel, but it's usually not a big difference.

wide open throttle air fuel ratio: the stock bin runs VERY rich for safety, targeting around 11.2-11.4:1 (usually ends up being more like 11.8:1 in reality it seems), where 12.9-13.1 would make the most power.

this is where all the power is in tune-by-mail stuff.

unfortunately this is NOT entirely safe to tune without a wideband o2 sensor, so you know what you're starting with, and a car in known excellent condition (i.e. ensure your fuel pressure isn't dropping off).

as such, even tune-by-mail guys are either very conservative with how much they adjust this, or very foolish when it comes to tuning this area, as every car may be a bit different, and this is an area where the car is NOT very good at being self adjusting if a problem occurs with the engine.

if you go too far, it'll detonate and melt holes in stuff.

there are some other tweaks like adjusting when fuel begins to cut off for deceleration, or adjusting the oxygen sensors to run it a bit leaner to get a bit more fuel economy, but the gains are tiny.

of course if you're auto, then tuning transmission behavior would be good too.. both when to shift, and how hard. that's something i don't know much about.

Hey guys
Looks like I might have finally found the right thread/people to help me out with tuning my formula. I too am really new to tuning. I would like to learn how to get better gas milage and how to make more horsepower. I'd rather learn myself than ship my PCM off

- add a couple degrees of timing below 170 degrees or so (to take advantage of the thermostat, but still safe if it heats up)

- lower fan turn-on temperatures to match new thermostat

- increase integrator delay to stabilize blm/int from relocated o2 sensors

- lean out power enrichment slightly

- datalog for knock after that

thats about it. the rest is all preference.

tunercat newbie...

Hey Steveo, Do you have pics of where to change these settings? Im new at this and I dont want to break anything.

Im mostly interested in how to tune in tunercat for headers/o2 sensor relocation and of course more power without dumping tons of fuel.

95 firebird formula
58mm TB
Pacsetter Ceramic off road long tube headers
borla catback - no cats, no egr, no air
all UMI rear suspension with narrowed 9in rear 3.90
stock motor, stock 4l60e (2200 tq)

Any help is appreciated.. thanks in advance.
