Hey everyone, currently rebuilding my 1996 LT1 and I'm really confused right now on the head installation process, when I pulled the original heads they did NOT have washers on the head bolts and I bought a new set of head bolts from Fel Pro to use, are they supposed to have washers underneath the bolts? Also my local auto parts stores don't even have a listing for head bolt washers under that year. I know ARP bolts come with washers but what about just regular stock ones?

GM uses bolts in many places that have a flange built in to bolt head. These bolts are used without washers from the factory. I guess if it makes you feel better, you could use washers on the head bolts.

Just make sure you use washers that can stand up to the pressure being exerted on them. In other words, high grade washers.

As Coco mentioned if they are flange bolts then they do not require a washer as the clamping surface is already as wide as a washer. Are you doing a very basic build and wanting a TTY bolt for a particular reason other than cost?

Aluminum heads should always use washers under the bolt heads. Cast iron heads are ok without washers, but still require the "washer face" type bolt heads described above.
If no washers are used on Al heads from GM, their torquing procedure had to accommodate the added friction/galling of the bolt head into the aluminum. Don't try that on a rebuild.
