I think i have a lifter tap. There is a chance I dry started the engine dry after I did my tune up. What is usually the cause of a lifter tap? Im just trying o find a place to start looking. I live I Massachusetts so I will take it off the road and have all winter to work on it. Any suggestions? :streetrac

Usually the cause is 1 of two things: Mis-adjusted valves, or the lifter has collapsed.

Can you locate which side of the engine it is on? I'd take that valve cover off, rotate the engine to TDC for each cylinder and check the rockers to see if one is loose.

I agree with Chris. Could be a loose rocker. MIGHT be a collapsed lifter, but I would check the rockers first to make sure they are in adjustment, and if they are then move on to the lifters.
