DETROIT ? Chevrolet plans to take the wraps off a concept Camaro at the 2006 Detroit auto show in January.

Also, Inside Line has learned the automaker is evaluating proposals to revive the classic performance-car nameplate in 2009-2010 on a new low-cost rear-wheel-drive platform.

Among the scenarios under discussion inside General Motors is the development of a lower-cost version of the Sigma rear-drive platform that underpins the Cadillac CTS and STS sedans. Another proposal would take the new rear-drive platform that's being developed in Australia for the next-generation Holden Commodore sedan and spin off a low-cost variant for North America.

GM planners are said to have targeted several body styles for the Chevy and Pontiac brands on a new rear-drive platform, including a sport sedan, a sporty coupe and a convertible. The Camaro and GTO badges could be used on those vehicles, according to company sources.

Across town, Chrysler is said to be preparing a concept Dodge Challenger for the '06 Detroit show, to test the market for a proposed two-door performance car it wants to introduce around 2008-2009 as a potential competitor to the Ford Mustang.
That's about as official as its gonna get folks. I think '08 is more likely than '09...That's GM trying to put people off the trail a little bit. No way it should take 3 years after concept to get a car to market...not in the 21st century and not if GM wants to not shrivel up and die.

Actually the cost for a new contract on the Trans Am name is insanely high. So the Trans Am name is dead. Period. Now the Firebird, Firebird Formula name may not be. Though Lutz has said it is not coming back either.

I always read that there will be no more f-twins. There will be the gto and whatever the replacement for the camaro is.

I'm going to guess we are going to get something pretty strongly Retro, but the overall shape may be more modern.

As for drivetrain, I'm putting my money on 350hp 5.3L V8 (LS4?) and 5 speed auto or m6. I also expect a solid rear axle, probably from the Colorado (its quite a bit stronger than the 7.625" 10-bolt).

im hoping itll have the LS2 seeing as that motor is still basically new and it would make much more sense to use that seeing as the C6 has it too... no replacement for displacement, if they go down in size count me out i dont care if it has the same power. thats just me...

I agree. I expect it to be a 5.3L with hopefully an LS2 option coming in the next few years.

Here's what I'm hoping for:

A V6 model that's not "base" or stripped and boring. More like the Mustang V6 with nice options and customization packages.

An SS model as the main V8 performance model, with the LS4 standard and all the options and gadgets you might want. Perhaps an LS2 as an option, but that might take away from my top model wish:

Z28 as a Z06 style street legal racer. If the LS2 gets a bump to 420-425 hp in the next couple years, a lighter, less options (notice I didn't say stripper, just not ALL the options) Z28 (with unique wheels, etc.) could compete with the Shelby GT 500 (which weighs like 3800 lbs).

I'd be very happy with it set up like that.

:hitit:. that sounds good. i think the LS2 should be the base V8 however with a better tuned option for the top car. the SS should be the more comfortable one with the flash and the Z28 should be the road racer like it was orginally. a COPO would be nice........

ill have to see it to believe it....there is so much confusion...just cuz gm says they plan to release a concept does not mean they are bringing it back....there arent too many platforms for them to use for rear wheel drive....they will not use the corvette platform and im not too sure bout the cadillac one either...best bet is the austrailian one....lets just see what happens

well the reason that the TA isnt coming back is b/c they brought out something that took its place. the GTO.
and if you really want to get down to it GM made both cars, if one looked better than the other why would they care, their making money either way.
and the TA was over priced, you got basically the same performance for almost 10k less.
