The answer is simple. The V8 has a broader power curve. All you're comparing is peak HP rating. Thats great for dyno queens, but doesn't necesarily make for a faster car.
Then you also have the HP rating issues. From what I've seen, all 4th gens were under rated to make the Corvette look stronger. Imports tend to round up.
