Hello everyone,
I got a 98' firebird last summer, 3800 V6 and I am looking to put some money into upgrading it this year. The problem is I am having trouble deciding between some things and I have a few questions.
I am gonna get a catback exhaust and cold air intake but idk what cat back to get. I am stuck between a Borla and a Magnaflow but i am unsure which one is best. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Thanks,
PBendel

On my 98 V6 Firebird I had A Flowmaster 80 series.. It sounded bad ass till 3000rpms. I think the Flowmaster with headers and a full 3inch exhaust with High flow cat sounds damn good on a 3.8.. when I did heads and cam it really made my car sound more like a Lt1.. But Flowmaster is not the best performance exhaust out there.. I was looking for the best sounding exhaust and flowmaster was it. The best performance exhaust is probably a SLP Loud Mouth.. hope this helps.. Check out

I'd do the Magnaflow myself.

ok, I was thinking about going with Borla or Magnaflow, my buddy said that flowmaster sounded to ricey, idk i will check them out more. Borla has dual quad exhuast and supposidly is the best but im not sure?

I remember from testing with cut outs Borla and Magnaflow both showed small gains with an open cut out. I'm just not a fan of Fart mouth er Loudmouth. Either way pretty much anything you get you'll pick up power over the chokemaster. Got you and the first replier mixed up.

Well along with power i am also looking for the deep rumble sound. I have checked on videos online and it seems like Borla has the deepest sound followed by magnaflow and then Flowmaster. I am just wondering which one you would recommend for a 3.8 L V6 that gives both performance and the best sound. Money is not an issue.

Either the Borla or MAgnaflow is what I'd go with.

I'd go with Magnaflow myself in a new vs new scenario since it's cheaper. If you can find a good deal on a Borla then go that route if you wish

I have a Borla adjustable on my car currently. Also have 3" all the way back to a high flow Magnaflow catalytic converter and Clear Image Automotive headers. Sounds great with a full block off plate in the adjustable section.

It didn't sound perfect when I was tinkering with the exhaust though. I had different pipe sizes on the way back with the stock cat, and log manifolds etc. I had major rasp at higher RPMs.

If you're just buying the cat back exhaust and don't plan on doing all the way up to the motor, then I've heard Magnaflow is the best way to go.

Flowmaster sounds great from what I've heard, but doesn't flow well...(ironically)

Flowmaster sounds good at idle on the series 2, but once you hit 3k rpm like mentioned above it starts to sound like rice.

I wouldn't put flowmaster on anything but a show car where sound quality is the primary objective.

I have the same magnaflow too and love it, you can usually get a used one on ebay or cragislist. I wanted a valid warranty so I got it here. Magnaflow 36265. Also some of the forum sponsors selling magnaflow usually have a sale going on. Either way its a great cat, sounds great, and very easy to install.
