So while installing a new cam in my 94 firebird i torqued the cam retainer bolt too hard on the left side and it snapped. right side is in and torqued to spec. My question is how necessary is it that i go in and try to drill the broke side out? the retainer seems very tight even with just the one side and cam gear is on snug and tight as well.

The retainer seems tight now, but once you start using engine the cam will be banging against the retainer. This will slowly bend the retainer outward causing cam wear or breakage.

There's a reason that GM used 2 bolts to hold retainer.
