recently i came across a trans am on craigslist that has an apperantly real lt4 engine (not just lt4 parts on an lt1) and it caught my attention. before i was debating wether to get an ls1 or lt1 but if this is the real deal then i can get the speed of an ls1 at the price of an lt1. the owner said he had swapped the engine and it has about 20k miles on it and the body has 142k. it only needs a paint job from what i kno and it is $4200. do u guys think i should try and pick it up or is it a bad idea? thanks

i heard that the lt4 engines put out around 320 horse. is that correct?
they were 330 and IIRC there were NO trans am's built with an LT4. there were 29 Firehawk Firebirds and 100 Camaro SS's built plus i think 6 prototypes or something? but no trans ams.

I wonder what he got the motor out of. i'm guessing a 96 6 speed vette as those weren't as rare.
That is still expensive especially if it needs a new paint job.

The spec is 330 HP but tests have shown that it is closer to 350 HP. The extra HP was downplayed by GM so as not to draw away attention to the then upcoming release of the LS1.

I have one in this:

4200 for an LT4 car? How bad is the paint and the condition of the car in general? If the car is in relatively nice shape I don't see that as being expensive.
i agree, 20k on the motor? thats nothing, just barely broken in, lol sounds like a good deal to me too.
That would be a well cheap buy over here, hell i'd spray it myself for that money. ;)
its a good deal if its a real lt4, its an lt1 car swapped to an lt4 i guess, run the numbers on the motor to make sure you are getting what you pay for. also make sure he has some kind of proof that it only has 20k on it. it would suck to pay 4200 for an lt1 t/a w/bad paint and highish miles with an lt4 intake slapped on it. Just make sure it is what he claims it is before you buy.

I agree, if its not an original LT4 car its not worth much. Has 140k+ on the body and bad paint.
:werd:How do you have bad paint on a plastic car?

you can paint anything and the clear coat will still peel. plus the roof, hood, back quarters and hatch are all metal.

There were NO LT4 Trans ams

Wrong! the only exterior body panels on these that are metal is the hood and rear qrtrs.......try a magnet on your roof and hatch :craz28:
u r right my bad, the roof and hatch aren't metal, what I was getting at is clear coat will still peel. And no one said trans am's ever came with lt4's

Oh, don't worry ... I did. Thought I could stick a CB Mag Mount there when I bought my '95, and am still kicking myself for all the scratches that occurred when I floored it from 60-90 on the drive back in PA after I bought it :craz28: . Is partially magnetic, though, but I don't really know why.
I read they had the option of LT4 with WS6 but I’m assuming that is a misconception as they have the same exact casting numbers.
