So driving down the road last night and the #8 spark plug popped out of the car, started making quite the racket. Head threads are stripped. Doing some reading and seeing what has been recommended by folks in the past I see Heli Coil
kit (which is lower quality) mentioned and a NAPA kit. Best option is Time-Sert but that is $$$.

This is for an engine conversion so space is tight. I am going to remove the exhaust manifold to improve access. Has anyone done this before and would recommend which repair kit to purchase? Any other advice? Here are tips I have read about so far:
  • Make sure piston is a BDC
  • Use axle or heavy grease on tap to capture aluminum debris
  • Remove, clean tap and re-grease multiple time to capture debris
  • Use compressed air to clean out cylinder

Thanks!

While the method you list will work most of the time, it only takes 1 piece of sharp metal to scratch up a cylinder.

If it were my car, I'd remove the cylinder head to do the repair. I know it's a lot more work to remove the head, but the time is well spent if it prevents engine damage.

I use heli coil sets from Napa. Quality is high.
