Hello,

My 1995 Firebird Trans Am lights go on without me telling it to. Whenever I start my car, even with the headlight switch on the off position, they go on and pop up. Sometimes when the headlights don't turn on when I start the car, once I release the handbrake, my lights turn on... Any idea what's going on? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Judging by the flag in your Bio, I am gonna take a guess, and say that you, and your car, are Canadian. My Firebird is also a Canadian Market car, and they do have automatic headlights. In mine, there is no indicator for the auto headlights, so it just has the off, parking lights, headlights option.

Couple questions. First, does this happen in the bright light? When you drive for a few minutes in bright light, do they eventually retract, and shut off?

When I turn my key to the "on" position, the headlights go on and they just stay on until I turn the car off. They're not dim or anything, but I've found there's no way to retract the pop up headlights unless you completely shut off the car. Even with my light switch on off, the headlights are on.

I have had a problem recently where my high beams were stuck on and whenever I turned the car on the, high beams were on, and the there was no way to turn it off. What I ended up doing was disconnecting the battery, and reconnecting it, and that seemed to fix it... and now the high beams are working fine. So there's probably something wrong with the computer module on what's controlling the lights.

Any ideas on what's wrong with it? Thank you for the response. I appreciate it!

If this is happening in bright sunlight, I would guess the sensor. It is located under the dash pad, pretty easy to get to.

Lighting FAQ

That link has the instructions for defeating the auto headlights if you would like, as well as a picture of the sensor and wires.

As a heads up, the behavior you describe is perfectly normal. When the auto lights activate, you are not able to retract them manually. In the off position, they will function with the key in the on position. I park in parking garage for work, and my headlights will auto pop when I pull in to park, and then go down after a few minutes in the sun when I leave.

Good luck
