New car, starter problems

Ok so I just bought a 1998 firebird convertible for cheap, apparently thought it had a bad starter and it did the nose was cracked off the front and in the bell housing so I got the piece out and there was nothing else in there so I bought a new starter cause the flywheel looked fine and the car cranked good for a second then the battery was low so I jumped it with my other car and then it started grinding again, the part of the flywheel I can see looks perfectly fine but am going to turn it by hand and inspect all of it any advice will help but we want to take it to Pensilvania in a week so please respond ASAP

Thanks
Chris

your flywheel is likely damaged from incorrrect installation or a sticky bendix

starters need to be shimmed when installed. with the bendix engaged and the starter not turning, a feeler roughly twice teh size of a paperclip needs to be able to fit in there
