my new v6 vert

so i just picked up a 98 v6 5speed vert, that needs mechanical work. I have an 01 auto v6 salvage title car sitting around, that i been stealing parts off of,for z28s i have, so i figured if i need to swap engines im not really worried about it. I just got the car and havent done a thing to it, im sure ill throw a battery in it and see if it starts in the next week, but just looking at the 2 cars the 3800 intake and air piping looks compltely differernt from the 98 to the 01.. but both look stock to me. does this make sense? the 98 seems to angle down and the 01 intake goes straight at the radiator. thoughts? I always thought that 96/7-02 3800s were the same. im sure ill have some Qs as i dig into this one.. hopefully it starts.

well no respose to the above, but i guess it doesnt matter at this point. I put a battery in er and she fired right up.. pretty happy with that one, ran for 20 mins with no overheating issues.. Wrap on the gas up to 4-5 k and it spits some black smoke.. and then seems to bog a bit when it comes back to resting idle...

Im prob gonna start with plugs and an oil change, just because.. but im thinking the black smoke has got to be a leaky injector or bad fuel pressure regulater, ill start with pulling the vaccuum hose of it to check for gas in it, and if not ill pull the rail and prime the car to check if any injectors are leaking..

update to follow.. let me know if anyone has other thoughts on this one, or if im doing something wrong?

I think you are heading in the right direction with an unknown vehicle history.

Cts giving pcm the wrong coolant temp info can cause very rich fueling. I'd do a running sensor scan to see what picture sensor data paints. might find something to head you in the right direction for troubleshooting the rich condition.

thanks for the tips... luckily for me it was the easiest to diagnose... pulled the vaccuum line off the fuel pressure reg.. and it was soaking wet.. so obv the fuel press reg is leaking gas into the intake.. $35 later and an oil change.. and well see what happens. should have that done by the weekend.

well no more black smoke .. yeah... Geeze GM should have moved that stupid 3.8L up about 4inches from where it is.. how can a v6 be such a pain in that big old engine bay... Snap ring for the regulator is on the fire wall side of it.. ie you have to take the fuel rail off to replace it... if they had just made it face a differnt way it would have been a 20 min job instead its a 2 hours job. in retro spect.. if i had used some mirrors and custom tools maybe could have got it done without removing the rail.. im sure gm makes a special tools the techs use.. but without that it was way more difficult than it should have been.

Also replaced my window motor. man im getting good at that.. 3: 3/4 in holes in the door skin and drill out the rivits w a 3/8 bit.. and your ready to install the new one in 10 mins or less .. i remember the first time i tried to do one it took foreever, now its like a 30 min job total..

Practice makes perfect. That's why I can change a head gasket on a fiat x1/9 in about 2 hours.
