alum heads vs cast iron heads
helping a guy on a 96 Impala SS. Stock has the cast iron heads. it blew the headgasket overheated and cracked the head. i know its junk. So now im helping look for new heads. If i found one that matched he might want to go that way, but if not then i could go alum or cast right.
Are there any differences in lt1 heads as far and flow, combustion chamber size and design. Which should i be looking for Alum -Cast, and not have to retune.

The cast heads flow better untouched, but the aluminum heads weigh less and of course disperse heat better. I have a set of cast 350 LT1 heads off of a 94 Caprice for sale for 50 bucks + shipping.

Not to mention that the aluminum heads have smaller combustion chambers and thus, a higher compression ratio.
Still......if I had the choice of iron heads for $50 or aluminum heads for $200......I just may opt for the irons, since the aluminums aren't $150 better in stock form.

No.......
To be honest, the B-body crowd don't do a lot of porting or decking of the iron heads......too much trouble!
I'd say that more than 99% of us running ported heads are using the aluminums or aftermarkets. Almost no one is running ported LT1 irons.

You just mostly use a porting bit that doesn't have as big a opening between the cutters. We've got some at the shop that could probably be used to port a set of cast iron heads but we use them for general metal work.
