Originally thought it was header gasket... and very well could still be, it's crumbling to pieces.... but my next train of thought leads to a valve about to fail. Don't that need crumbling to pieces heh.Only happens when the engine is warm/er, and the oil is thinned out a bit.
Any input? Gunna start tearing it down this winter if I can't pinpoint it before. Should I try something like Marvel's Mystery oil/Lucas Oil treatment?
I got to looking at it and it looks like everything is pretty much intact... but in the processes some more of the header gasket crumbled away in between cylinders 5 and 7. I dont really know about the rest of it because I can't see it with the stock junk manifolds on. Ill post some pictures soon.
Not that any of pictures really help, but im now really leaning towards the manifold just being old and junk now. Defiantly a ticking/clicking sound as you can hear in the video above.
Im gunna shoot for some new ones here pretty soon. It's driving me insane. (how about longtubes eh?)
until you remove the exhaust manifold....you can't tell if it is cracked or broken often as the heat shield is currently masking it. Fairly common issue with the LT1, especially on rear cyl.. (read between cyl 5 & 7)
Could be just a lose manifold bolt which then caused the gasket to burn through or you may find you have a two piece exhaust manifold when you do unbolt it....
you just need to get wrenches out and look.
it may also be a sticking lifter. Go buy a $4 stethoscope at Harbor Freight and listen to each cyl, intake & exhaust, for any "different" sound than the others (tick). If you isolate this down to a particular cylinder than pull the valve cover. Watch the offending cyl to see if the rocker moves like the others. "Maybe" one just need adjustment.
from this side of the internet it sounds more like a exhaust leak tick so see if by using a stethoscope you can determine if the tick is coming from internal or external engine.
Just curious if you got to the bottom of this as my '93 LT1 sounds just like this (plus an additional chirp I'm trying to diagnose in a new thread). Thanks.
