Engine Cleaning

I have a 2001 TransAm Convt and want to clean the engine and everything under the hood. Is there some chemical recommended to spray on it and rinse it without damaging any of the wires, hoses, and components?

I spray carb cleaner throughout, followed by a Simple Green and hot water sponge bath (wipe down), then I pour warm water from a pitcher to rinse the simple green solution.

I do NOT recommend using a water hose with a pressure nozzle; letting water flow from a hose and over the engine with no pressure will do.
