Default Certified Trans "Road Ripper 1000" anygood?

I just dropped her off at the trans place where i got whats basically a stage 1 built transmission I'm assuming, installed for $1,995 with an 18 month/18k mile warranty.

I actually got a deal because my uncle went to school with the manager so it would have been a bit more. Anyone ever heard anything about Certified Transmission? or the Road Ripper series? The 1000 is supposed to handle UP TO 100hp over stock.

Never heard anything good or bad...never heard anything really...comparatively 1740 bux gets you a performabuilt 4l60e rated to 500hp, and a decent 2500 converter with a long ass warranty delivered to your door step...so price wise it doesnt seem like to bad since they are also installing it also. Id want to know what modifacations are being done, what parts are being used... is it just a cheapo shift kit and some alto frictions? or do they also upgrade parts like the pump and the sunshell.... for 2 large, I would definately ask some questions, not just fly in blind.

I noticed they say adding more clutches. I and many others have tried that before and it doesn't work because they don't dissapate the heat well enough and tend to warp. It may be good for a stock or bolt on application though. But as mentioned before a Performabuilt is a cheaper/proven transmission.

After checking out your link, I would personally spend my money elsewhere. As stated by mysterybird, the whole extra clutches thing is a waste of time, and is actually counter productive... It looks to me like that trans isnt going to be any better than a stock rebuild...so a stock rebuild, with install for 2 grand is not so hot...order the Performabuilt lvl1 and have it shipped to whoever is gonna do the install, youll get a better warranty, and most likely a better trans, and you'll be in it for the same money..

Thats what would make me leary....if you are building with top of the line parts, wouldnt you be proud of it and list whats going in its guts? sounds to me like they whack the line pressure way up and toss in extra clutches and call it a day....

The problem is, i don't have the money. I'm putting $1k down and the rest is being financed. And i have both my trans shop and the company giving me warranties. & yea not mentioning much about parts does scare me. i figure, i have a great warranty, and i really plan on selling the car around fall maybe, to upgrade to LS and T56 so i think she'll work just fine.

A decent upgrade 4L60E should have at least the following upgrade parts in them; beast sun shell, 29 element borg warner sprag, input drum support ring and modified 3-4 piston, corvette servo and oil pressure boost valve assembly, higher strength oil pressure spring, valve body kit, plus new standard parts that many rebuilders don't change including; all new bushings, torrington bearings, low roller clutch, accumulator pins or replace with pinliss upgrade accumulator pistons, new 2-4 servo ball capsule. Also for my own upgrade 4L60E I would want new GM 5 pinion plantary carriers, not aftermarket one's.

Ok, i just called and spoke to one of their tech guys, Jody, and surprisingly he had some good news about the internals. He told me that they use the Beast Sunshell, HD sprag/elements, minor valve body mods, mild shift kit, and a slightly increased line pressure for a more firm shift. He did however say that they are using OE clutches, just adding a few extra & GM bushings/bearings etc. So at least i have somewhat of a parts/manufacturer list, and a great warranty. I'll let you guys know how it is when i pick it up on Tuesday!

You do realize that this is an 18 month old thread, right...? Oh well...

Either way, it sounds like I need to be charging a lot more for my transmissions! Those are some steep prices for some mediocre builds. Or, you can pay a fortune for a Performabuilt, I guess...

Its all about the weight the name carries and the warranty you can offer.

I guess so...! I would hope that, at some point, it would be about the quality of the transmission you build and the equipment you're using, though.

I wouldn't have even made a comment (and maybe I shouldn't have at all), but reading through Performabuilt's website, it struck me that they're selling lesser packages than I build, day in and day out, for just about twice the price as I charge. And all with a lesser warranty, I might add...

Anyway, it was just one of those "holy crap..." moments... The chances of me raising my prices are, well...slim, at best. I stay extremely busy, make a very good living, and with a great reputation. I'm good with that!
