was just wondering how someone would go about this, would it be easier to just stick the motor on the existing motor mounts in the first gen cuz its the same mounts as a SBC? or would it be easier to somehow put the K member off of a 4th gen onto the first gen with welding fabrication? this isnt a project im gonna do, i was just wondering how someone would do it since the LT1 is closer to the dimensions of a SBC than the LS1 which people do the swaps with all the time.

thats what i was thinking, cuz if you kept the K member you could use the same steering rack and front suspension which are far superior to the first gens. i was just wondering how much fabrication would be involved, or even if its the correct width.

You would have to do alot of fab work.

There is a website of a guy who does it I dont have the link off hand but go to any search engine and type in 68 lt1 camaro or something of the liking. Guy has a sick car with an LT1 and a 4l60e. I honestly think the hardest part of the swap would be the T56 and even that shouldn't be horrible with some chopping.

nevermind found the site for you

i was reading the new issue of HOTROD today and i see someone has beat me to the punch and already makes complete "hybrids" sticking a new 1st gen camaro body on a 4th gen platform and front frame rails. i guess it answers the question of whats the easiest way to get a LT1 and T56 in a 1st gen...buy it already done. id still like to attempt this project myself one day, except id like to use a 68 firebird.

I hate those hybrid 1st gens. they use every piece from a 4th gen except the actual body. I'm talkin gauges, seats, rearview mirrors, everything. I think the whole point of owning a first gen is the old styling inside and out. I don't want a 4th gen that looks like a 69, i want a 69 with an LT1

I know a guy that has put lt1/4l60e's in all kinds of stuff. A 57 belair, a 89 nissan 280z, a old school ford kit car. The list goes on.

He uses painless wiring harness'. Said its easy. I would just bolt it into the stock mounts. Hopefully the t56 will be close to lining up. The auto swap would be easier.

My dream car would be a first gen body with all 4th gen stuff. Including AC and everything. That would be awesome.
