i was wondering if there is a horsepower difference (that would justify the cost) of going with Edelbrock E-Tec heads in lieu of Vortec heads.

the way i understand it is that the E-Tec is not an aluminum Vortec head, but rather an aluminum head with the Vortec bolt pattern.

i am considering the SDPP Vortec TPI crate motor for my '89 Formula 350, but i would prefer the weight savings and added "trickness" of aluminum heads. plus, i would assume that the Edelbrocks would have about 20 or 30 hp over the Vortecs outta the box.

anyone know anything about this?

I've heard bits & pieces, but can't give specifics.

Another consideration would be GM Fast Burns. Also Vortec-type ports/mounting. Not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, but the ZZ4 crate with Vette aluminum heads makes 355 HP, same shortblock (including cam) with Fast Burns makes 385 HP.

There are also some large port Vortecs available. But, they're cast iron, while the Etecs and Fast Burns are aluminum.

A few years ago, the PHR magazine Engine Masters Challenge was won by a guy using out-of-the-box Fast Burns. They would be my first choice if you're willing to put out Etec-type bucks.
