Well my girlfriend's car has been running a little rough lately. She had it hooked up at a garage to a machine that tells you what's wrong, etc etc. Well it turns out he EGR Valve is bad. So since it's just emmission's stuff, does she really even need it? A new one for her car is $200+ so if she doesn't need it, then it could save her some cash :D

Does she need it? Depends on if the car gets emissions tested (I'm guessing no since you are in WV), and if you have the ability to turn the codes off permanently.

Pull it off and clean the crap out of it.

I agree with this 100% I dont' care what it is thats broke.. I will try and fix it before i buy anything new. Whether its a power antenna or anything. Since the EGR is pretty much just mechanical just take it off and do like what 96slow said clean the crap out of it. Then blow it dry with some air.
200 bucks saved is like 200 earned :cancan:

Yeah, WV definitely doesn't have emission testing, so looks like i'll try cleaning it first, and if it doesn't succeed, then off it comes
EGR does more than reduce emissions. I don't think most people understand how the introduction of a "little" exhaust gas into the intake benefits fuel economy and actually enhances the flame front for better combustion. Personally, I would not remove the EGR system from my car.

Thanks for sharing 01z, that's very useful, and makes a good deal of sense, especially lowering the combustion temperatures of the engine
It's a good discussion so thanks for bringing it up. I often read about people having persistent knock even though they use the highest octane gas they can find. Without the oxide and dioxide (H - H2) mixed with the intake the combustion temperatures rise too high to control detonation. The problem could be that they have removed the EGR system or it is malfunctioning.
