View Full Version : Which Exhaust?

ok so im kinda stuck here. Right now i have a billy boat custom exhaust, it was on the car when i bought it, and its nice and all, not too loud , just throaty and mellow, its been described as a ferrari/porsche sound. And yes that makes me smile, but im trying to remember im american muscle, not euro muscle. i want loud ,throaty, slightly obnoxious, and sumthin that screams power. My buddy has an SS and he had the loud mouth and then i think he switched to a glass pack, which i think sounds pretty good, but ive had shops tell me that will sound bad (as in not good) so im stuck any ideas?

bassani makes a really good sounding exhaust (never heard it on a camaro/ta) but ive heard it on trucks and stangs and it sounds MEAN

P.S. knock the cats off! sounds alot meaner

I'm getting ready to order Melrose long tube headers and exhaust system but haven't decided on which mufflers to use. I had side exhausts on my 79 Vette and it was the greatest sound ever! Let us know what you do.

Is there a website (besides ls1sounds.com) that I can hear the different kinds of exhaust?

Go with either GMMG or borla they will grab you attention. A glasspack has to much popping to it like a cherry bomb and isnt throaty.

lm ftw i love it. Very obnoxious though

If you want the all out loudest most badass sounding musclecar setup out there, you want GMMG.

If you want smoother, more exotic-ish finesse-type sound, you want Corsa.

Only two choices in my mind.

Personally I hate the Borla, way too much popping. Loudmouth sounds a tad high-pitched at high RPMs and if you plan on headers or a cam, forget it, you'll sound more like a civic than anything. Magnaflow has that real dirty, raspy, thrown-together-weekend-racer sound, not my style. The only Bassani setup i've ever heard was on a Steeda Q380, and that sounded absolutely wicked. Could be totally different on an LTx/LSx motor though. They do have a pretty innovative true-dual setup...dunno how well it works though.

A thousand bucks for a TD kit seems too much, though. I tried to listen to a clip and the one I found for it didn't even sound that great.

I'm going with gmmg for sure if I ditch the 2otl. I'm just waiting to see how that sounds with longtubes- which are still sitting on my floor, by the way.

i agree

i have the gmmg with long tubes and no cats...

with 6th gear crusing... it doesnt drone on... but if u get on it at all.. and i mean at ALL everyone within a mile will hear you comming...

i get NOTHING but compliments from people... even thos jackass mustang gt owners lol..

i will never put another exhaust on an fbody unless i go duel

I went to GMMG's web site and heard the clips....sounds good and im sure better in person. I think thats prob gonna be my choice, oh and you wanting to get rid of those long tube headers any time soon? (If it fits an LS1). Thanks guys.

GMMG, Hooker Super Comp. , Or SLP LM, just say screw it and do true duals

DrummerReagh
04-23-2007, 01:47 PM
Well now im thinking about the Bassani exhaust. I saw it on FbodyMotorsports and it says true dual...hmm Id like that. but still dont know how it sounds....so far the GMMG's sound mean..... ...I like mean.whats the difference between the two?

GMMG is the perfered catback among the LS1 crowd that isn't hooked on Loudmouth. If you are planning on expanding the exhaust to headers, Y, etc. don't go with a Loudmouth 1 or you'll regret it. I heard LM2 is actually pretty good but after all of the statements i've read, its obnoxious, drones, and every cop within a mile or 2 will hear you coming if you step on it. I've never experienced GMMG in person, nor have I found a good quality recording of it. B&B is quiet, almost like the hooker system, but a little more throaty when u step on it.

Corsa, Borla, and GMMG are the top picks that I have seen on most of the forums. Im still stuck on which to get: either the GMMG or Corsa.

Do yourself a favor and check out the new design of the Magnaflow, you might just save yourself a couple hundred dollars AND be quite pleased with the results.................

The new Magnaflow, eh? I have a sound clip of my Magnaflow cat-back, but I highly doubt it's the new one. I only spent $350 on it

personally,

I'm a fan of stepped headers, a big cam, and bullet mufflers off the collectors...haha

But, i'm a bit partial!

DrummerReagh
05-02-2007, 11:57 AM
Well, should i cut the cats and possibly new headers? I mean I could just go all out on the exhaust, cuz thats the only way im gonna get the sound I like im afraid.... but if so, which headers??? and weve got emissions down here!

I hate the way the loudmouth sounds. I wouldn't get it if I was you. It sounds killer at idle but thats it. I am going to install a dynomax bullet muffler and see if that helps anything.

Uhh, it won't shift into gear when stopped, unless engine is off. Rev matching is needed when shifting while in motion.

You know what. Whats it going to hurt. Try some royal purple in there both of you. I love the stuff. If you arent quite ready to pull the tranny it might get a few more miles out of them.

Its no garuntee. but that stuff can work wonders. Its kinda like slick 50 in a knocking car. Did it fix the problem no. But did make it so you could get another 1000 miles out of it. yes.

Hey I got a question. On the Borla system, does the adjustable cat back make any difference in sound over the non adjustable?

Hey I got a question. On the Borla system, does the adjustable cat back make any difference in sound over the non adjustable?

The "rear section" Borla systems from what I have seen run the mid-pipe into the muffler and then both sides of the tips come out of the muffler. To get exhaust flowing out both side with the adjustable you have to open up the plates on the passenger side and it gets very loud. Especially if you have headers and a ORY, it was VERY loud on mine. I have switched over to the Hooker cat-back and like it a lot.

I had the BB Tri-Flo on my Camaro and I always wanted more volume, but because the exhaust costs so much, I couldn't bring myself to taking it off. I installed an electric cutout instead. I love the quiet exhaust/loud cutout trick. It made for a lot of fun, especially after I installed the cam. Just something to think about.

I have slp shorty headers and a flowmaster muffler on the stock pipes. I get lots of compliments on the sound of my 97 Z28. This option might be a little cheaper than some of the options mentioned. I will warn you that since putting in the headers I have some pipe rattle that I am trying to trace down.

I just ordered a set of pacesetter LT's, ORY, and a hooker catback. I will try to get a sound clip up soon.

Finally getting that nasty SLP loudmouth off there. Sounded terrible.

I have really thought about that.....Im just afraid of the "Straight Pipe" sound. I dont want it to sound like it back fires everytime i let off the gas ya know, but Ive never heard a straight pipe on LS1's...

You know, We had glasspacks on my moms Z28 and I still have wet dreams about the sound, It's the mecca of exhaust sounds for a muscle car in my opinion.

Of course, that was on a '75 with a 350. Not sure how it would sound on your ride.

I like how your Crown Vic sounds, though.

DrummerReagh
09-23-2007, 11:21 PM
Yeah Glass Packs probobly would sound "Nascar-ish"on an LS1 IMO....and I dont care for that sound. And the Crown Vic does sound good huh...straight pipes on a Ford 302.....beautiful. Im gonna miss her when I sell her....
