I will be doing a new rear soon and wanted some recommendations on rear gear ratios. My car is a 383 with a D1 with 12 psi. Built A4 with a 2400 stall. I plan on almost all street stuff. I may be dreaming but I would hope the car is fast enough that without a roll cage they wont let me play at the track. Good for me since I really dont want a roll cage. I have had a 373 and now have a 342 both allowing for useless 1st gear hard starts. I was wondering if 323 would allow for better hook ups on the street or should I just aim toward drag radials and stay with the 342 gear. Ideas anyone?

If you are going to be fast enough to need a roll cage of even a roll bar then you should definately look to hook up with good tires before you switch gears for more traction. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I did not mean to sound stupid it is just I will be doing a new rear and will be picking a ratio for that anyway. As far as tires go I would love to keep a street tire but it seems most people have problems with traction. Any of the 3 drag radials would be a good option for me but since the car ia a weekend ride but I get nervous about the idea of getting caught in the rain with them. As slim a chance as it may be. I have 17" wheels now and was thinking of changing sizes from 275s to 315s if it would benefit me. What do you think?

it will definately benifit you upgrading to a wider rim/tire more rubber on the ground means more grip, especially if you put slicks on it.

I think that the rubber compound is more important than the size of the tire. I am getting it done on 235/60/15 ET radials. I can guarantee I wouldn't hook up nearly as good on hard 315-wide street tires.

Pick tires to maximixe traction and gears to optimize RPM.
