What kind of gears to I have???

I have a 99 Z28 with a M6. the rear end makes a annoying whining noise. In first and second gear i can break the tires loose. I could be going 15 or 20 MPH in first gear and floor it and the tires just spin like crazy. I'm not sure if thats normal or not. do u think i have shorter gears like 4:10 or something?

i have 4:10 gearsand i have a similar situation excepti break loose all the way up to 4th and i think my first gear maxes out around 30 or 35 mph ill check and let you know.....if your speedometer is way off you definatley have after market gears and if you really want to know you can open up the rearend and count the teath on you ring and pinion gear. im pretty sure you can count the rotations of the driveshaft compared to the rotations of the wheels

are the gears factory? shouldnt they be 3.56's?

M6 cars got 3.42's

you most likely have 3:42s.

with 4.10s at 4000rpm youre doing 24mph


but since you didnt specify whether it was 4k or 5k rpms....

with 3.42s at 5000rpm youre doing 36mph
with 4.10s at 5000rpm youre doing 30mph

i have 3.42 in my formulaand it will break the tires loose in 1st and 2nd when you stomp on it at 4000 rpm with a k&n dropin filter and catback only

When I had 3:42s 30-35mph in first was the perfect spot to go WOT in a race, tires would just grip...but I had just short of drag radials as my street tire.
