I am going to convert my 95 Camaro to automatic, as I have decided to make it into a strip car. Does anyone know if there is a way to run a 4L60E in a car originally equipped with a manual? Is there a stand alone controller, or can the stock computer run it with the right harness? I have considered a three speed but really want the overdrive for the ride to the track. Thanks

It should be able to be done. One thing for sure your PCM will have to be reprogrammed for the A4 and your speedo will be off and need to be corrected through the PCM. Idle will also need to be adjusted. I know I saw a write up of the conversion before, I'll see If I can find the link for you.

Here is the write up but on a LS1. Should be about the same except for the tranny lines and your car will have an inspection cover. When getting your A4 tranny, if your car is early 95 then make sure the new tranny doesn't have PWM. It can be converted but you wouldn't want it for a track car anyway.

So all the PCMs are capable of supporting an auto? By the way, jpack, the likn you gave turns up gibberish.

I did this swap back at the beginning of the year. You'll need to get an A4 tune thrown in your PCM, but other than that it's just swapping the parts. Let me know what kind of questions you have.

Other than swapping wiring harnesses, I didn't do any. However my reverse lights don't work and neither does my shift lock. If you want those to work, you'll have to do some wiring. I just didn't connect the plug for those because I didn't feel like messing with it. The car isn't my DD, so I wasn't too concerned about it.

Thanks for the info. Did you swap in a complete harness from an auto car, or is there one that is specific to the trans? It sounds like you had to do the entire harness.

You could do the wiring yourself. I had to with my swap.
I went to a junk yard, grabbed the connector, got some pcm pins and popped them in myself. Real easy to do. :D

How many miles on your tranny? I have an A4 and would be willing to trade ya if the miles are decent.

I just swapped the full harness. Easier and quicker than wiring (for me atleast).

Sorry, been offline a few days. Yeah, the miles on the tranny are decent. As in 150000. Sixth is supposedly broke, but I don't know for sure as I've never had it out of first. Basically I bought a chassis, cheap, from a friend who was going to do contract work in Iraq. He used to pull a bout with it. Believe it or not, the chassis is clean AND straight. The clutch is shot, too, as well as the power steering, A/C, pinion seal, rear main seal, oh, and did I mention it was stolen and the interior trashed? Perfect candidate for a 12 point cage! What I plan on doing is either getting the tranny rebuilt to sell, or sell/trade the M6 related equipment for the A4 stuff. I plan on having the auto trans built to take 7-800 horsepower, so all I need really is a good core. And a money tree:lol:
