I'm about to drop a built 350 in my 92 RS camaro in front of a 700R4. The tranny will be built up, but since the person doing it for me is booked up for 2 months, I'll have to wait and the engine goes in next week. Going to someone else is not an option because my guy is doing the work for almost free.
The tranny has 170,000 miles on it and it runs and shifts great. My question is, What can I do to it until it gets rebuilt to make it a little stronger? Is a shift kit easy to install? Would it be helpful?
I will try to baby it until it gets rebuilt, but I don't know how long I can controll myself.

A shift kit would wear it out even faster, other than that I know about nothing about that tranny.

Really? When I rebuild it I should put a shift kit in it right?

Tranny builders are divided between anti shift kits, and pro shift kits. But I really don't know much about autos other than what I've heard.

Wow, but I didn't think that a shift kit wears it out faster. Most, well all of the posts I've read lean toward the shift kit side. I guess I'll have to go-a-searchin again. Thanks Grims.

There is an alternate route to a shift kit, but I can't remember what it is. A friend of mine put an aggressive shift kit in his wifes car, and the tranny died within 80 miles.

Man, I would be pissed if that happened to my car. Maybe I'll just try to contain myself until my tranny guy gets a chance to rebuild it.

For now on the third gen I'd go with the vette servo, an s10 converter and an aluminum driveshaft. Baby it and then get a good converter and tranny. With a good (like a vigilante) converter, you really don't need a shift kit.

Did I forget to mention a new filter and flush? And the disputes that go along with that recommendation? :D

Man, I would love that but I have a 700R and a built TH350 (that I'm trading for the work on the 700R. I find it hard to go hunting for another tranny.

Where would i get vette servo? And I read a few posts about an aluminum driveshaft not being worth it. They went into all the formulas for rotational mass with respect to the variable of the increased radius of the aluminum driveshaft. It did make sense to me.

Yeah, and I'm afraid it ain't much with 170,000 miles on it.

let me barrow your car for a day i will let you know afterwards. but no seriously 170g's on the ticker its probly time for a rebuild. it make feel smoot and nice because it is slippping. and honestly from us driving our cars we dont really notice the gradual break down until we see how someone elses is to comare it to.

Its not slipping. The shifts are solid and straight forward. I've driven cars that the tranny slips and this is not one of them. I'm actually surprised that it shifts as well as it does.
I hope I can get it rebuilt soon because when the nitrous goes in, its a goner for sure.

I also heard about the shift kit pro/cons.
I've had a kit in mine for about 2 yrs and 12k miles. Granted I don't beat on it since my rebuild I feel it won't hold up too long. I do want to do a rebuild on it before I really get on it.
This is why I'm planning on my T-56 conversion. No cam worries and future plans call for an STS and for that I'd rather have a stick.
I say do the kit and go till she blows.

Or say perhaps, that I had (because I do) a TH350 short tail that was built to handle 800hp that I was planning to trade for the labor on the 700R build. Would it be worth it to put the 350 in now if I had a driveshaft and an adapter bracket to fit the mount or wait for a couple of months until I can build the 700R?

A properly installed shift it without getting crazy will substanitially increase the life of a tranny in good shape to start with , but I do not suggest putting one in a tranny with that many miles ,
Most of the horror stories you hear about failures after a kit install are the result of either inproper installation of the tranny was near dead to start with ,

Would anyone run the TH350 instead? I mean, its just sitting there.
