I have an automatic 96 trans am. A few weeks back, my car would not go into park. I drove it home and took off my shifter knob and noticed that a piece of white plastic had broken off from somewhere. I didnt think too much of it when i installed my knob back on because the car went into park without any problems.

Lately, the car will stick in park at random times. It happened again today so i took my shift knob off and noticed that the white button/piece of plastic (located inside the metal shaft of the shifter) was bent to the side. When i pushed down the white button the car would go into reverse, neutral, drive etc. without a problem which leads me to believe my problem is with the knob itself. But i figured out that the 1/4" white piece of plastic that broke off in the past came off that button in the shaft.

I have no idea what you would call that part, if i need to get a whole new shifter assembly or what? The knob itself looks to have no damage to it at all. the problem HAS to be from that piece of plastic that broke off.

anything will help!!
thanks

I think that's your problem, but I have no idea of a quick fix for it.
