View Full Version : Suspension issues cornering under throttle.

I was on a road course the other day and had a hell of a hard time making turns while under throttle. When I would go into the turn while trying to accelerate the rear of the car would start jerking back and forth like nuts.
Currently the only suspension mods are SFCs and DA Koni shocks.

I would think a PHB and a sway bar would help with that.

So, is this normal, and I just need suspension upgrades? This seemed far to drastic to just need an upgrade. More like something was wrong.
I was side by side a charger going into the turn, we were doing about 100, into the turn he kept going into it just fine...my car started to shake and I had to let out.
I am startign to get noise from the stock 10 bolt, it sounds like a carrier bearing, could that cause this issue?

If you are overdriving the car, you can cause the rear to start to oscillate. Meaning, if you go in hot and put a boot full of throttle (or just too much throttle) in it, you will power the tail loose. Once it's loose, if you lift a bit, it will "grab" and attempt to toss the car around the other way. You can get into a series of oscillations that way that can be quite violent (often resulting in a spin). I'm guessing this is what you're describing.

So what do I need to do to correct this?

Back off the gas earlier going into the corner. Haven't you ever heard that slower is faster? :)

Bah, that charger was kickin my ass around the corners, and I know he wasn't lettin out on the throttle. He also weighs a ton more. Maybe the IRS was helping him out there.
Although, on the straight a ways....:)

I believe what you are experiencing is a Warped Rear end housing causing the axle to bind when loading the weak side of the tube .. There was an article in this month's Pontiac Performance Magazine of a company there in TX that Repairs and strengthens a stock 10 bolt for like $580 ?? Enabling the stock 10 bolt to handle up to 450 HP .. Sure beats the alternative of a 12 bolt at 4 x the cost

If you let off the gas earlier going in, you can probably get on the gas earlier exiting. That's how you can be faster by going slower.

Throttle modulation and having a feel for the grip levels of the car. It's something you can learn, but not something I can teach via keyboard. The best way to learn it is to get out to an open track day (that has instruction) at TWS or to go run some autocross events, or both. What you want to learn will involve time behind the wheel with some instruction from an experienced person. Not that we all aren't "excellent" (maybe even the worlds best, just ask us) drivers, but we could all be better. Instructors are there for that purpose.
