HI:
This weekend my transmission, when in neutral acts like it is trying to catch into gear. It makes a random grind type noise (with the clutch out. sound goes away when I press the clutch in) and the car surges forward a little. It shouldn't do this.
any idea on what's going on? Is it an easy fix or am I "sol"?
It's an 02 trans and only has 24k miles or so. (engine/ trans combo came from a wrecked car, though)
any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-BV

Sounds like maybe the clutch engagement point is out of whack and even with the pedal to the floor it is not fully disengaged.

Is the shifter moving around/vibrating like it's going into a gear, or does it just sit there.

I don't think that's a clutch...

no, just sitting there.
the engine will be idling, the car in neutral.... then it'll make a noise as if it's grinding (like trying to put it into gear without using a clutch) and the car surges when it's doing this.
I didn't notice the shifter moving any.
If I press the clutch pedal the sound goes away.

you have bearing or gear pieces floating inside the case and they are trying to bind up. please forgive me gent's but i used to have a crx i know i know its a honda ricer. i was young and stupid. anyway. it did the same thing when the input bearing got ate up from racing it. (12.2 with a 200 shot) but ya that would be my thought on your situation. my car did that exact same thing.

Same thing happened to my 95 Talon. My solution to the problem? I sold the car and bought my Z.

Hopefully this $100 tranny won't give you the same trouble.
My two cents would be to have someone knowledgable open up this new used one you bought and have them go through it to see if it needs any new parts first.
