I was thinking of doing a gear swap. I will probably go with 3.73's for a few reasons. I'm pretty sure my car has 2.73's from the factory because I can be doing 70 mph down the road and only cutting about 1300 rpms. how much of a drop in gas mileage would I see, it is a weekend street car. I have A4, 3000 stall, full exhaust, ram air. Any input is appreciated.

3-5mpg probably...You're looking at increasing your 70MPH rpms by like 600 rpm.

That's not gospel, just an educated guess.

I thought we had a thread on this not long ago, but could have been another forum. Didn't see in sig, but I hope it's a 12 bolt or 9"

More gear teeth in a 10 bolt = borrowed time IMO, but ppl do it all the time, and end up swapping out gears on a regular basis.

Why don't you contact one of our sponsors and ask? Driveline solutions, as they can build you just about anything, and may be able to steer you in the right direction.

my 4.10's are strong.... im thinking a prayer was answered

i did a couple burnouts during the break in (100 miles after install) and now im doing a few 3-4k rpm clutch pops to spin em, and the gears are quiet. they had no signs of a wear pattern at the 500 mile oil change.

I don't understand that. You must be talking about the 7.5/7.6" units. The 8.5" units are actually quite strong. I know of several 10 second impala's that are running 4L60E's and 10 bolts with 8.5 units. That rag the hell outta them. And countless 11/12 second caprices running 10 bolts and 8.5" units. I'm not tring to step on your toes, but even if the guy is running 12's, it not as much of a strain as a 4200lbs caprice running 12's.

Just my opinion.

The F-body only has a 7.5" ring, so if your going to put a 8.5" rear you should just step it up to a 12 bolt or 9".

yea. I didn't know until yesterday that the 8.5 and 7.5 were different housings. I was under the impression that it was all internals.
