Forgive me for my cluelessness but i'm about ready to throw a B&M shift kit in my 01 T/A To take up some sloppy second gear shift issues, and someone tells me its all done by a RE-PROGRAMMER :dontknow: Fill me in on this please.I'm a Musclecar nut,not a computer programmer. Whats the best one and how the hell does this stuff work. Please fill me in on all the specifics.
thanks much.......

It can be done by a reprogram but a shift kit can change it some as well.
The shift speeds and RPMS are all electronically controlled. Shift firmness is also controlled by the PCM, but by changing out the separator plate and changing the springs, etc. you can increase firmness as well but it will increase firmness of all shifts at all RPMS.
The best solution would be to do both.

What is it that you disagree with exactly?
I agree there is such a thing as too much line pressure, but the best solution is to raise the static line pressure with the shift kit and then use the tune to soften where needed.
I had a transgo in my car with the 2 washers and at first it was brutally firm, then I went in and reprogrammed, softened up all the low MPH shifts but left the high speed/high throttle positions shifts alone. More line pressure means less slippage at the shift, which means your clutches last longer.

I usually recommend a shift kit for firmer shifts rather then upping the pressures to firm things up, but thats me.
