Is the stock transmission for an Lt1 Z28 usually reliable? I just bought my 96 z28 about three months ago with 93,000 miles on it and a perfect transmission. Now I put on about 2,000 more miles since then and third and fourth gears on my transmission are gone and the transmission fluid is fried. I don't even beat on it, maybe the occasional burnout and drag race, but whenever I go out I usually park the thing and ride in someone else's car. Are they known for shitting the bed? I'm about to get rid of it and just buy a third gen camaro so I can beat the hell out of it because this one I tried to pamper, but it still died on me. Has this happened to anyone else, any suggestions how to fix it? Or do I have to buy a whole new tranny? Also, the vacuum has a leak in it somewhere, could that have anything to do with it at all? Thanks in advance

The 3rdgens have the same transmissions (well the inards anyway) as the 4thgens do.
It is time for a rebuild or a new tranny for ya.
Any of the sponsors here on the board can help you with a new tranny.
Feel free to click their links, or for a cheaper alternative shoot me a pm.

Your car came stock with a 4l60e..... They are weak and break often...
If your plans are to keep her on the street and not to make a sub 11 sec monster then there are more then 1-2 of our sponcers that can build you a VERY nice 4l60...
Rock ON's reputation preceeded them to this site.

Best of luck either way you go...
If all you do is rebuild it stock... expect to break again.

I think I'm going to have it rebuilt mostly stock, but beef up the torque converter a little bit and maybe add a new shift kit. After that I'm thinking of just selling it and buying a manual 3rd gen Camaro or Trans Am. The automatic tranny isn't strong enough for the lt1 without a complete rebuild and beef up which costs too much. I just want a manual IROC or something of the sort that is cheap, easy to fix, and can take a beating(even though I never beat on my current lt1 z28).

That's the thing that pisses me off, it was never ever beaten on. Im the second owner of the car and the first owner was an old retiree from the South, theres not a spot of rust on the entire body. I don't know if it was because of the age or what, but I never beat on it.

4L60E's are not known for there living a long life in stock form. But the 3rd gen will have the even weaker older 4L60(renamed from 700r4). I've seen some 4L60E's last 200k in our cop cars around here, but the majority of them start to go south around 80k, and only have more failure rates as the milage goes up. There are many builders that can have a 4L60E hold up to 11 second impala's, and 10 second firebirds. It will likely cost around 1300 - 2000 for a quaility prebuilt unit. but quite of few of them are worth it. I will suggest Probuilt Automatics(pricey) (I removed the link) , and Caronlina Pro Transmission (I removed the link) . Both have great reps on ISSF, and will support power.

I hope that doesn't go against any forum rules. I wasn't sure if it did, so I removed the links as to not "pimp" these places or undercut supporting vendors.
