The more they cost, the stronger they are? :roflmao:
AAM, makes the OEM gears, and they are tough Sh*T. My vote goes for American Axle Manufacturing. they lap them at the factory, tolerences are TIGHT, and they are hard, harder than Richmonds. I forget where i read that, but a guy had rockwell tests of a bunch of gears, and the AAM's were the toughest. I think motive gears were the 2nd toughest,
also, the way that richmonds are cut, make them loud. they are known to whine VERY loud. AAM's, and Motives are much quieter.

Strange is the strongest gearset you can buy. Motive and AAM are both OEM suppliers to GM.
I have Motive gears in mine.

Hard doesn't mean it's stronger. Gears aren't meant to be that hard because if they don't give a little, they snap.

The heat treating process usually hardens the surface to make it tougher but leaves the inside of the part a little more ductile. YOu don't want a soft surface becaue it will wear out quickly.

I'd go with either Strange or Motive.

Correct. I used to work in a heat-treating plant; and I spent a lot of time at the Rockwell hardness table measuring the hardness of the metal (rock bits for drilling for oil).
I have Strange - they have never let me down, but I have an automatic, which is easier on the rears (the car's and mine :) ).

ok so i got about eight different answers so whats the verdict? also, theoretically speaking just because in exploring my options if i were to run the strongest 4.10's, rebuild all of the seals, run a girdle with grade 8 bolts, and preload my drivetrain every time i launch with nitto dr's how do you think the rear will respond to that, or in other words how long till it blows?

A friend of mine has gone through many sets of gears, I keep telling him to stop doing doughnuts on his DRs and ditch the 10 bolt, but he just keeps buying new gears. Anyways, what hes told me was that Richmond were the loudest and easiest to break, Motives were quiet and lasted longer than the Richmond, but not a whole lot. The SLP 4.10s he had lasted the longest and were by far the quietest set. And the Richmond/Motive's were either 3.23s or 3.42s. These were behind a H/C bolt-on LT1 with a T56.

I have an AAM 3.42 with a solid spacer and a girdle set up by DLS. Didn't make any bit of noise. After a few passes at the track its making a slight noise, but with the duals and the radio on, you wouldn't even know its there.

i dont really beat the crap out of my car especially with dr on it, so i want gears for now that will just last until i can afford a built 12 bolt but with strange 4.10, a sloid spacer and a ta girdle do you think i will be alright for a little with a few passes on them?
