ok im getting my rear rebuilt soon
the guy asked if i wanted 3.73's or 4.10's because 3.42's are supposedly "only for 150mph on the freeway" and i just smiled and said thats why chevy put them in there.
my question is, if i do get 4.10's, what would i have to do? i know re tune the ECU for the new gearing, but what else? also, im getting the TA cover and welding the axle tubes and getting a solid spacer.
also, would i be able to spin 2nd gear finally:lol: or even 1st if i mash it? because currently i cant do either, even 1st gear and on the carpet.

The PCM is going to have to be tuned for either gearset for the speedo to be right. Luckily you have an M6...A4 cars have to have the shit points tuned too otherwise the new gears really screw them up.

PCM4less? or hypertech?

I would go with hypertech. That's what i used in my camaro when i got 3:73 gears. It takes 5 minutes (maybe) and you can usually find them used pretty cheap. Just make sure if you buy one used that the last vehicle was restored to the stock programming....you cant program more than one vehicle at a time with those programmers.:)

Find a used Hypertech if you are only needing the gear change. If you are needing any performance tuning at all stay away from the HPP though.

Just buy tunercat or LT1Edit, and a cable. You will need them later anyway.

you cant spin 1st? i basically have the same car as you and can rip my tires apart in first...and mine are new 245/50R16s. you must have some STICKY tires.

actually theyre almost bald lol i dont know whats up with that.. if i hammer the gas to the floor, all i feel is a slip in the rear when all the TQ hits it in the first second of flooring it. and no spin. im hoping with these gears thatll finally happen...
only thing i may need for tuning in the future is if i port the heads and have to change the fuel curve and everything. would pcm4less be good, so i can tune the whole thing while doing the gear change tune?

PCMforless is always a good choice. They also do free or reduced price re-tunes within a certain period of time.

im leaning towards doing that.

You have other problems if you can't spin the tires by flooring the gas and poping the clutch.

i can do that, im talking about flooring it in 1st and breaking the tires loose while rolling with the clutch in.

how soon would i have to tune the computer for the speedo after the gear swap? i wont be able to for a few weeks afterwards to build up some funds to do it. would i just have to watch my speed so i wont be speeding?

you'll be fine if you just stick with the speed of traffic.
The only tuning for gears in an M6 is just for the speedo, so if you watch your speed you won't be hurting anything :)

Guys dont you think he should be able to do a roll-on burnout? Even stock? Doesnt a m6 usually put more power to the tire? Look i've got a 98000 mile stock lt1 a4 3:23's, and the other day i got a roll-on at 25 mhp on dry pavement, now i even couldnt believe it when it happened, but none the less it spun. I dont even have the free mods! I think something else might be the cause. I'm probally wrong though. Does anyone agree?

i used to be able to do a mini rool on spin, but it went away as the rear end gave way. clutch isnt slipping (centerforce dual friction, 3k miles on it).. motor is healthy for 148k miles.

Excuse me, i didnt see that the rear end went out. That probally allows some slippage in there somewhere. You should be good to go once repaired.

im thinking on going with the motive 3.90's now since my top end will be limited with 4.10's and there will be a little thicker teeth on the ring. anyone running them in a 10 bolt yet?

yea i recently put a new eaton setup in with 410s spool up fast but really have no top end more for light to light runnin and not only that your driveshaft spins much faster now so if something is out of balance youll know it right away

The only reason your driveshaft turns faster is you spin more RPMS at a given MPH. The gear change just takes driveshaft rotation and multiplies axle rotation.

yeh i got them in now and did a 40 mile break in
they spool up sorta fast, kinda noticeable difference, and 1st is still useable thank god. i just noticed that i dont get up to the flow of traffic as fast in the time im in 1st and 2nd.. thats the only downfall.
460 miles left until i can pull on ricers again
