I have the factory 7.5 10 bolt rear with the 3.42's with a m6. My car only has a few minor things done to it. Maybe 25hp-30hp worth of stuff. I am putting on an AAR differential cover. I have Nitto 555 275/17 on the front and 555 315/17 drag radials on the back mounted on corvette 11" wide rims in the back. I was told by a friend that these tires are real sticky. I plan on taking it to the local stip in a few weeks. Will I have any rear end duarbility problems? The car has 84,000 miles on it. No grinding at all, limited slip works great. I just don't want to drive an hour and a half to the strip and blow my rear end. Any advice is appreciated.

Yes, you're going to run into issues. I would recommend being easy on launching with those tires. One good high RPM dump could break it and you'll be on a rollback wrecker on your way home.
The limit is about 400hp for automatics and 350hp for stick cars. But I've seen near-stock LT1's shatter the 10-bolt too so if you abuse it enough it doesn't matter how much power you put to it. Its just too weak in critical areas to stand up to much.

GM could have at least given us the 8.5" like Roadmasters and Impalas, but nooooo.

It was carryover from the 3rdgen....there was no budget for a different rear end...
in 1982 they had no clue the 10 bolt wouldn't be strong enough 15 years later.

I got a spec stage 3 clutch and it grabs like a sonofabitch. In your opinion what is a safe launching rpm? I have dumped it on the street at like 4000 but that was before all the work and the tires.

I would be careful with anything over 3000 rpm honestly.

315's bigger tire, and same set up here (M6 3.42 w/aaa diff), but suggest you not dump the clutch @ high rpms.....feather!
Probably on borrowed time such as myself, but still running w/275 streets, so I haven't done any real damage YET!

Like Chris said, you should be very careful at the track. It becomes easier and easier to break the 10-bolts as traction gets better.

You cant side step the clutch or power shift if the stock rear, but..... there is a way to get a pretty good time out of it and not blow your rear into peices...
a 3500 rpm clutch roll, instead of sidestepping and quickshifting instead of power shifting..
Clutch roll - keeping the rpms steady, come off the clutch about half as fast as you can lift your foot while matching up lift of your clutch foot with down stroke on your gas... It takes some practice and its alittle tougher on your clutch, but it is not as hard on your rear.
Quick shifting - instead of keeping your right foot planted thru the shifts like powershifting, instead you lift your gas foot half way during the shift and kick and lift your clutch foot vrs the kick and sidestep of a power shift.
do this and dont run back to back at the track and you should be ok at your power level... it does not insure you wont break... these things HAVE broken while in 4th gear not during a shift at WOT even at your power level... But it is safer then letting her all hang out...:streetrac

I got a 1.9 60 foot on street tires my last time at the track, good times are possible with out hurtign anything.
