Im having my LT1 completely rebuilt, and was wondering what cam/ rocker/ pushrod/ lifter package would be best to run in my everyday driver. This car will be driven two hundreds miles to college plus any driving I do while im up there during the week. My father thinks the LT4 Hotcam kit will be too extreme. Im looking for a good cam that is not too extreme and will be very reliable. Also I was wondering what everyone is running in there daily drivers. Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

its suprising how many college kids there are on this board that use their car to get to and from school.

LT4 HOT cam is one of the best all around cams you can buy for the LT1s, also the CC305 would be a good driving cam.
A tune will be needed to fully take advantage of any cam you pick.
You should freak him out and show him the 236/242 XE cam if he thought the HOT cam was extreme...

BUT to answer your question on the 'cheaper' side of a build up like this. Stock pushrods will work, depending on mileage the stock lifters will work or stock replacements. HOT cam springs will work with the HOT cam but if you go with a different cam normally the place (to the right>>) will help you with all the components to get you set up.

On another note, having been down the road of build ups and Daily use....I would keep it stock.

When you say tune I assume you mean a comptuer tune, as in like one you would get from madz28.com or pcm4less. And which place to the right do you suggest for the build. Also the motor has 118,000 miles so I dont know if all the old stuff will work. BTW I have tried to keep it stock its just all my other cars have always been highly modified I just couldnt seem to bring myself to leave this one stock.

Yes a PCM Tune, MadZ28/PCM4Less/Herron Performance/Others here can do a mail order tune that will help tremendously but the BEST is a dyno tune.

I have confidence in just about all of the supporting vendors. I have talked to Eric at VRE and would consider calling him up and talking to him. But there are plenty of others. Heck, a local shop could handle building the bottom end, it is nothing real special and if you do not plan on going wild for a while then a stock rebuild of the bottom end will do. There are people putting in Cams and heads at 100K plus if the motor is not making noises. So you could do that if you wanted to, put the cam in and ride.

I might have to give that Herron Performance place a try when it comes to the tune! I have a local shop doing the build. Right now im planning on going wiht LT4 hot cam kit just becuase I told my dad what you said and he would rather have a GM made part in it. I have another question, which roller rockers will work with stock valve covers 1.5's or 1.6's? Thanks for the help!

Tell your dad that Crane makes all the GMPP parts, LOL!!
The LT4 kit comes with the HOT cam, springs, retainers, locks, and 1.6RRs.
The stock VCs should go right on but if not you just have to trim some of the supports in the VCs, real simple!!!
OR go all out and get the LT4 VCs, they look good and should for the $$$.

There are several online dealers of GMPPs, I would not buy from your local GM dealer, it will be TOO high......

And the Herron Performance place can take care of ya!

I think Crane even grinds all of GM's performance cams too.

I have used the Melling OEM replacements from AutoZone with good success. and if you have a 94 you should already have "the good" pushrods so I would not change them either. and the HOT cam kit comes with Self Aligning Rockers so you do not need guideplates.

I started thinking about that anyway, with the SA 1.6 RRs in the kit you are good to go with what you have.

Now'a'days they have some great small cams, that are smaller than the hot cam but putting out more or simialar power numbers. I was quite interested in small cams a while back and found this thread on LS1tech.http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485425&highlight=small+cam It is one of my favorite threads of all time and I would highly recommend you go read through it there are some great small cams discussed in there and they may help you decide.

I have a car in the shop now with a CC Small cam. Once I am done putting all the new suspension stuff on it and will tune it, interested to see what kind of numbers it produces. I am not looking for a lot b/c the motor is a low compression deal (dont ask me why, I was not consulted on the engine rebuild).
