I have tried everything and I have had it with the 4L60E problems I have. I have had it rastacked, valve body replaced and computer checked and it still doesn't like to shift from 2nd to 3rd.
I want to put a different and stronger tranny in. Is there anything that I can just put in? 700r4? I hate jacking with the computer so I would like as little of those issues as possible.
If someone has something for sale let me know at w_dave_herbeck@yahoo.com or call me at 832-385-8211 ask for Dave

How much HP are you putting through the trans? Paging LS13RDGEN!!!!

What do you mean "restacked"? Are you saying that you had the clutches replaced and that was all? There could be a number of things that would cause a no shift situation. You could have a cracked accumulator piston, bad or broken seal in any of a number of places and so on.
You would have been better off having the whole transmission rebuilt and not just parts at a time.

My two cents worth.

I did have it completely rebuilt, plates, bands, valve body ect. I am not a tranny guy. I had it done by a shop. I watched most of the work done. Can anyone tell me a good strong tranny that is a direct or close fit to my 94 Z28 except for a 4l60?

Some guys have been running TH350's and TH400's with lots of good results. Of course you loose your overdrive though.

as for stronger trans, the th350/400s are pretty strong
the 4l80e its supposed to pretty durable and still retain OD (i believe)
the 700R4 is the same as the 4l60e minus the electronics

the th350/400 and 4l80e's need to have converions to make them fit

the only direct fit is the 4l60e and the 700r4, but the 700 seems like a step backwards IMO, you don't see many people running those in 4th gens

if you have the trans rebuild and are sure that it was done correctly, i think there would be something wrong with the computer. you say that it doesn't "like" to shift into 3rd, could you explain that?

What I mean is that it will shift into 3rd but sometimes I have to baby it to go. If I am going slow in 3rd it will go into neutral instaed of down shifting. The whole issue seems to be getting worse.
What kind of mods are needed if I go to a th350/400? What is the diff between the 4l60e and the 4l80e? Is it worth the trade?
I have just had it with this tranny. My problem is I don't want to have electronic issues if I change. HELP !!!!! Thanks, Dave

th350/400 - different torque convertors, different trans brace, and i think the DS lenght is different

4L80E - different gear ratios, and a bit beefier, i think

i would say go with a TH400 or 350 however you will lose the use of your speedometer to get that back i have a couple of ways to do it for free. or you would have to get the conversion for that. just as well those tranny's dont have overdrive. plus you would have to get a forward or reverse manual valve body so you can shift the trans.

but if you want a trans to take abuse. thats the way to go. if you are a drag racer. get one with a transbrake and a high stall a tci sfi approved flexplate. you would need a new driveshaft. Spohn makes one for the conversion as well as many other companies. but this also depends whether or not you have a long or short tail shaft. and you would need a different shifter. you dont need to change your crossmember all you would need is a 1" spacer under the transmission mount.... or buy the right crossmember from spohn. the trans will bolt up to the back of an LS1 with no modifactions. but will only use 5 of the bolt holes.

If your 4l60e is not shifting there is something wrong with your particular 4l60e not all 4l60e transmissions just yours , There could be many reasons the 4-3 downshift neutral may not even be a 3rd clucth problem but a input sprag giving way , I fi was you considering the cost or switching to a 4l80e and the loss of switching to a th400 or 350 i would seriously look at some real performance 4l60e transmissions , They can and do handle alot of power when built right , We have one customer pushing 680 rwhp and going well , Maybe you just arent looking in the right places for a 4l60e

Well, jeez, texxracer22, most of the problem is your home town. Now if you lived in Pearland...
Just joshing, I grew up in the land of Pears and went to or through Alvin many times. Spent my first year of college at Alvin Jr. College.
But, anyhow, I would have to agree with performabuilt. I'm not pushing his product, but unless you are trying to drive 1000 h.p. through your tranny you should be able to find a quality, built from scratch, 4L60E transmission that you won't have to make any changes for. But you need to go through a company that does this for a living. Just taking it down to AAMCO is not going to do it to find a high performance 4L60E. Ain't gonna happen.
Just my two cents worth.

I agree. People get crappy rebuilds, from local shops, or shops that just donno how to build one, which gives the 4L60E a bag name. I know several guys going low 12 on built ones(in a 4200 caprice. To mid 11's spraying N2O, THRU the shifts without issues(in heavy ass caprices). you just gotta put out a little more coin for the right one.

I'm no expert, or salesman - but that race pro performabuilt looks like a STEAL! 700 rwhp? for $1400. DAYUM! I know of quite a few that are setup like that, that run about $2100.

I hope performabuilt isn't like a NetGearheads(not dising performabuilt, but ya gotta use caution). cuz I think we all know what they did. (cheap tranny's that only were known for blowing up, and completely junking internals. they went bankrupt!)

I agree. I LOVE OD. The cars I had where it didn't have it, or work, ALWAYS got much worse MPG on the highway. Heck, one of them was at 4000rpm at 70, and I thought it needed even more rear end gearing. It NEEDED OD, bad. But its all up to you.

heck, even my 1947 Nash Ambassador 4dr, has OD. pretty fun to use it in 2nd, then press the clutch, put the Tree in 3rd, and it's already in 4th by the time the clutch is out. I can pull 25MPG, easy in that car. good ol straight 6. :)
