If they're old gears I'd definately check your fluid

Hmmm, 1Fastfamilyman knows for sure, he used to change his gear oil monthly.
I never touched my 10-bolt other than taking it off the car.
I can tell you how to do it in a 9", but it won't help you much, haha
EDIT: I retitled your post so it's a bit more enticing for those in the know

What would be the best gears for the stock 10 bolt? Im looking into getting new gears. Also is it an easy install or should I put out the $200 for installation

M6? normally I'd say 4.10's but I've seen too many break in 10-bolt's. 3.73's are a nice step though :)
Maybe a 3.90 if you can find one?

Lubricant for your baby .. is 75W90 synthetic with a lsd additive and yes you can check and change the fluid without removing the cover ..
1) remove fill plug .. if no fluid comes out your rear diff is low
2) inspect old fluid for contaminants ie Black specs, chunks or Dark fluid
3) you can buy a fluid remover from any parts house for under $10
4) fish the sucker tube into the rear end and remove all fluid making sure you keep up with how much fluid came out ( i do it by emptying the old fluid into old oil quarts with clear sides
5) Your 10 bolt should hold atleast 3 quarts of fluid but buy 4 just in case (fill till the fluid runnith over)
* If the fluid was contaminated or had any black specs , or carbon deposits you will want to run the vehicle 3000 miles and repeat steps 1-5 *
If your doing new rear gears deffintely shell out for install because getting the teeth spacing perfect is an art

I had a hard time getting 2 quarts in my 10 bolt and I had it apart so it was bone dry when I refiled it.
