I am trying to find out some info on the LS1 V8's. Being I don't have one nor a FSM, I am sorta lost....
I am assuming it has a crank and a cam sensor.
What is the resolution of it? It is similar in operation to the 3800 and/or LT1?
Do the coil packs connect directly to the PCM or do they have a module they connect to?
Thanks!!

Yes, the LS1 has both a crank, and a cam position sensor. The crank is fitted with a dual, 24X encoded target wheel (sometimes called a reluctor wheel) located at the rear of the crank, behind the #8 counterweight. The crank position sensor is located at the rear of the block, above the starter, on the passenger's side.
The camshaft is also fitted with a reluctor ring, which is located between the 4th & 5th bearing journals. The cam position sensor is located at the rear of the block, behind the intake manifold, and above the camshaft.
The PCM tells the coil when to fire the spark plug by referencing the 24X crank trigger, and the single phase, 2X cam location sensor, to know where the crank is in its 360* rotation, and what cylinders are on the compression stroke.
The LT1's can get a little confusing, as earlier model years utilized OBD1, while '96 & '97 LT1's switched to OBDII. The '96 & '97 OBDII LT1's utilized a crank position reluctor ring mounted on the crank snout, behind the crankshaft balancer hub. Whether you had an OBDI or OBDII LT1, ignition was more conventional than the LS1, as both versions of the LT1 used a distributor called the Optispark, although a lot of LT1 owners eventually wound up calling them "Opti-crap". For model years '94 through '97, the Optispark was driven by a steel dowel protruding from the front of the cam. To make things even more confusing, '92 & '93 LT1's used a splined hole in the center of the cam gear that drove the Opti. Because of the two different distributor cam drives, and the switch to OBDII in '96, LT1's used three different timing covers; one cover design for '92 & '93, another for '94 & '95, and, to accomodate the crank position reluctor sensor, a final cover design for the OBDII '96 & '97 LT1's.

Does anyone have the pattern for the LS1 24x and LS2 58x reluctor wheel?
