View Full Version : Why do people find the SRT-4 so desirable???

Four doors, FWD, ugly, Neon. What the hell? I just don't get it. Sure it makes good power but what the hell's the point if you can't get that to the ground.

Exactly.....someone once said to me you can make a turd run 12s with enough money, but in the end its still a turd.
Its no more desireable to me than a Pinto GT, LOL.

That's not to say it isn't a neat little car, but a) its not my taste and b) this is the SMACK FORUM!!!!!!
SRT4 sucks!!!!!! :twak:
I think people love them because 1. this country is infatuated with small turbocharged vehicles, and 2. the srt is pretty affordable.

04 Srt,Stage1 ecm,K&N cold air intake and a Buschur exhaust on Bfg drag radials netted a 12.84 at 106. Alot of bang for the buck.

I don't buy the bang for a buck theory either. For a third of the money you could buy a 70's Nova, stick a motor in it and run faster then 12's.
Leave Neon's to what they do best. Crappy subcompact rentals cars that everyone complains about getting when they get one.

Yeah but young kids think old Novas are slow...they won't buy it unless it has 2 cams and 4 valves per cylinder and has a wing. Plus some people absolutely have to buy only new cars.

Well absolutely having to have a new car and yet choosing a Neon is grounds for a mandatory mental health exam.
I fear for America's youth. We V8 muscle car driving people need to hurry up and pollute the enviroment to kill off the future generations! lol

You guys dont' get it b/c you are not part of the new "hip" crowd that is into the import craze. For what it is, its not bad if you look at the money spent. Its a fairly inexpensive turbo car. Not necessarily my cup of tea, obviously, but for a lot of my peers (yes I am 22) and the younger crowd that is the hot shit right now. I am not going to rain on their parade too bad, except when I smack one around on the track... or street... whichever is available!!! LOL

I have a little brother age 11. He hates ricers. He makes fun of them normally i usually dont because thats their taste. He is quick to make fun of a fart can and a wing cars. My brother is already saving up for his 16th b-day to have a camaro. So not every youth is like that.

I'll be in the minority here...
First off, I can appreciate anything that is decently fast. The SRT-4 certainly falls within that category. I dont know exact figures, but I bet it gets very good gas mileage, and it's probably got something most cars try hard to achieve, the "fun to drive" factor of a light(er)weight vehicle that can move pretty decently in a straight line or through the curves (although it may not excel at either), and it has four doors meaning it's practical. Now I'll give it that its not the prettiest thing on the road, but thats secondary IMO to it's pluses, and it really doesn't look THAT bad, especially in the darker colors.
I bet if you took one for an open-minded test drive you'd probably have fun driving the little thing. Granted it might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it isn't a cool little car. Now the attitude of the little punks that drive most of them, thats another story...
I guess I should get in line more with the smack talking spirit. :p

But i tihnk vendetta was pointing out that EVERYONE and thier mom is now buying them because it sthe hottest shit on the market and its ungodly fast from the showroom. I remember when I first start noticing things while riding in a car. An 18 second 1989 Honda Accord felt fast. Then my buddy got a high 15 second GSR, that thing felt like hell on wheels. When I got my Trans Am we were blown away. Some people just haven't been raised around cars or been in a fast car, so a low 14 second SRT-4 that is fun to drive feels like a missle to them. It has alot to do with the young-and-cocky attitude also.
Just remember, there is always someone faster. Granted there are alot of people faster than SRT-4s (lol) but thats not my point. :)

I understand that it's cheap power, but what the hell is the point? You can't get that power to the ground. The fastest stock suspended srt-4 will stay in 10s forever. Sure I'd have fun driving it, about as much fun as I have driving my WRX. But that doesn't mean I'm going to jizz all over myself every time I see a fast one at the track like I do with F-Bodies. Just seems pointless to me.

I was the same way. In high school my friend's 305 TBI motored Firebird felt fast as hell. Ever since then, if it doesn't run 10s, it ain't fast in my book.

My love for cars stretches to when i was little before i ever rode in that pace car i LOVED exotics. Namely porsche's and i had an infacuation with vipers. (of course the old ones 96 my favorite year and color scheme ffor a gts).
I also like MG's my grandpa would buy one soup it up sell it and repeat we still own his last one given to my big brother before he died. Ive built engines for several occasions. 6 is my build count and none ive got to keep. Ive been around cars all my life. But also most of my friends onyl recently 15ish became car guys so i can see how a 14 sec srt-4 seems fast to them because all they have ever known is dads truck.

I drove my cousins Stage I SRT 4 yesterday.
Pros:
Seats, I like the seats. They are comfortable and have bolsters that make support in the twisty bits.
Shifter, it had a short shifter with "booger bushings" (?) and the throws made my B&M Ripper look like a stock, sloppy, POS (and I love my ripper).
Power, It had good power and was fun to drive.
Handling, it handled reasonably well and had some sporting potential for twisty roads (it's not a race car, but it's competent)
Brakes, not outstanding, but decent (I am running 6 piston wilwoods and race pads, so it take a lot to get into my "outstanding" category).
Cons:
Wheel hop. First gear is useless. Let out the clutch, stand on it, get to 2K RPM and shift to second before you rip the half shafts out of it. That puts you into second gear really early. My gut instinct is that I'd be "long gone" by the time you get that thing moving and you'd be playing catch up (which it may or may not have the power to do).
Torque steer. Once you get through the wheel hop and under boost any imperfection in the road will cause it to try to change lanes. It requires that you stay on top of it. Not the end of the world, but that's what happens when you try to put "big" horsepower through a front wheel drive platform (if this thing was AWD, it could be "evil").
Styling. Not terrible, but it is still a 4 door Neon. Of course WRX's have 4 doors too....
Overall:
I could use one as a daily driver (though I likely wouldn't), if I wasn't driving my Camaro every day. It's inexpensive, has potential to be fun and, they are not making Camaro's anymore.....

i'd take a SRT-4 anyday for a daily driver. sell the wing on e-bay never mod a thing and be done with it. it would never be a racer to me. just a fun car to drive that gets decent gas milage. it would be like driving a vette in comparison to what i drive daily now

I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to totally disagree with this statement. Right there, you just set your self up to made look like an ass. I won't link this over to ClubGP, because then you'll really feel small, but I will say this. From a dig, a GTP will take an SRT, granted the SRT will catch and pass the GTP somewhere around the 1000' mark. But down low, the GTP will own an SRT. My 04' GTP CompG, even with a stock pulley, will hang with any Stg. 1 SRT through an 1/8 mi., and trust me, I know, as there are probably 7-8 SRT's here in Clarksville that run at the local 1/8 mi strip every Fri. night. After I install a pulley, ported manifolds, a 3" downpipe, 1.9 rocker arms and LS6 springs, with race gas, my "family car", which has more room than an SRT BTW ;) , will pull a Stg. 1 SRT from a roll.
Keep in mind, this is just my family hauler, as you can look in my sig and see where my heart really lies. ;) I didn't buy the CompG to race, I bought for carrying my wife and 2 sons in style and comfort. I average about 26 mpg on roadtrips, and about 20-21 around town. It may not be that great, but it sure is fun beating the local SRT's from stoplight to stoplight. :D

do you really wanna use the bang for the buck theory. Should I even begin to talk about used LS1's, and how cheap you can get them for now? Should I even mention that 106 would be enough to only hang with a stock A4 car from a roll? Should I mention how a Stg. 1 SRT would get raped from a roll by a slightly modded 6-spd LS1? First of all YES THIS IS A NEON THAT I DON'T ARGUE just like the SS is a camaro and the cobra is a mustang so on. I have always been and will always be a Chevy fan. The truth is that I love the F-Body GM made a big mistake in killing it. I would be driving that right now if I could(No I would not want a used one). Some one in my Family has 2 '69 Camaro very nice cars and also a 02 SS Sunset Orange. So like I said I am a fan. Now when they say best bang for the buck they are not talking about a 1987 car that you buy for $1000.00 and build an engine for 4000.00 and make it fast. They are talking about NEW CARS. With my car having Stage 1, CAI, and Catback. I pulled a 95 TA(Auto) from a roll and left him like it was parked. We also ran from a dig and he got me off the line and in third I reeled him in. For the guy that has his Family GTP that beats Stage 1 SRT's with pulley and I don't care what else how much money are we talking for the mods you were listing. Give the SRT the same in money for mods and you will have you A$$ handed to you bad. Gm decided to make the Cobalt. They made that car to compete with our car and it doesn't stand up to ours. Our car hangs with cars that are way out of its price range im not saying we beat them all but we sure put up a fight I have met some ls1 guys here the DFW area in Texas and they are cool and give us props. Like I said I love F-Body cars but don't think that all of you all can beat an SRT-4 when you roll up on one you will be very sad when they pull away and leave you thinking about what the hell happened.

But, if you will go back read THE WHOLE POST, you will also notice that I said that a GTP could hold an SRT off til about the 1000' mark, then the SRT will come back around. Now, go back and read the part where I was talking about adding a few certain mods to a GTP, I guess you could call those mods "Stg. 1" mods, and yes the GTP will hang with, or pull on the SRT. ;) Let's see, for about $500, my CompG canhang with Stg. 1 SRT's, or at least the ones around here. :)
Oh yeah, welcome again, I hope you enjoy your stay here. :)

If a Neon beats me in a race, I'll stick think, well atleast I'm not driving a Neon. Which is probably no difference then a guy driving a Ferrari who get's beat by a guy driving a Camaro. I doubt that guy would think "Wow what a cool car"
You can dress up the Neon as much as you want, put any combination of letters and numbers on the decklid, make it run 8's and get 70mpg. But in the end it's a Neon. But hey high school girls like them so they must be cool. ;)

Thank you for welcoming me and for our cars Stage 1 is a chip that is it it gives us about 10 to 15 WHP Stage 1 (http://www.mopar.com/street/products_srt4_stage1.htm) My car stock put down 224 to the wheels so dont think that you have beat some big mod with stage 1 go find a stage 2 or 3 car to race and you will find a hole different animal. I did read your hole post and did see that you were talking about if you had those mods. That is my point! All the mods you mentioned are only $500.00? What whp do they give the GTP. I have also raced GTP's here at the track they were spraying Alcohol and only ran mid to high 8ts in the 1/8 mile.
Edit changed 1/4 to 1/8

There, fixed it for ya. :roflmao:
Orangeneonboy... chill with the yelling, and break up your posts a bit, they'll read easier and you'll be taken a tad more seriously. Bring some friends and visit our ricer board too. ;)

I said I love F-Body cars but don't think that all of you all can beat an SRT-4 when you roll up on one you will be very sad when they pull away and leave you thinking about what the hell happened.
:D
I like SRT4's, but I won't hold my breath for that.

ahh, there ya go...I learn something new everyday. :) I honestly had no idea what a Stg. 1 SRT was, I just hear ALOT of guys around here refer to it. So, I guess all the guys around here, have a Stg. 1, plus intake and exhaust then.
As for $500 on a GTP, you could get the ported manifolds, 3" downpipe, a homebuilt 4" fenderwell intake, and a 3.4 pulley. Add some racegas, and you're looking at mid 8's easy in the 1/8 mi. Now, throw into that mix and aftermarket PCM, 1.9 rocker arms and LS6 springs, and you'll see low 8's with a sticky tire. Granted, these will be with optimal track conditions and great weather. ;) If you want to really see some serious HP though in a GTP, throw an intercooler on it, drop down a few pulley sizes, and run mid 7's. :) With those mods, a GTP should be good for 108-110 mph in the 1/4, depending on whether or not it's a 2-door or the 4-door.
But, to be honest, most all of the Stg. 1 guys around here are running high 8's, but with an obviously better trap speed. Like I said though, in 1/4 mi, it would be pretty close.

stage 1, 2, and 3 are performance packages from Mopar for SRT-4s. i think the stage 3 puts out around 300fwhp.

just an optional little package you could get on the 04-05 GTP's. It adds F1 style paddleshifters to your sterring wheel, so you can put the car in Manual mode, and use the tapshifters for upshifting and downshifting, it also includes better gearing, better suspension, better steering, and one or two other small lil things. Same hp an tq as a standard 04-05 GTP though. The better gearing helps slightly. ;)
