help me with building my short block

ok now im in the procces of stripping everything off my old block....ive got pretty much everything out...now my question is how to i go about timin my new short block ??? .... do i just find TDC of cylnder one then put the crank gear on ? sorry if i sound iignorant iver never built a motor before ...and i really dont wanna mess this up....so needing to know how it time it with a STOCK cam is my biggest worry....and also lookin for any more adivce on building up a short block....thanx in advance
